THQ Sues EA and Zuffa Over UFC License

It appears the zombie version of THQ, the defunct game publisher, is suing EA and the UFC over the UFC Video Games License which EA now owns.

THQ alleges that EA and Zuffa (UFC's parent company) colluded to terminate THQ's licensing agreement with Zuffa in order to transfer it to EA. During 2012's E3, EA surprisingly announced they had acquired the UFC license. Before that time, THQ had released three total UFC titles, each receiving high critical marks including UFC Undisputed 3.

In the complaint, THQ says both EA and THQ discussed in early December of 2011 about selling the license and that "internal financial information, including detailed sales and revenue figures for the UFC Franchise" were shared.

By the end of that month, Zuffa informed THQ that they wanted to terminate the licensing agreement because of THQ's poor financial state. THQ believes EA provided Zuffa with sensitive information information showing THQ's perilous financial condition in order to obtain the UFC license for themselves.

THQ is alleging "tortious interference" with the licensing agreement as well as the license changeover being fraudulent under US bankruptcy law. THQ is seeking nullification of the transfer and the recover of intellectual property or the value of it, plus $10 million in damages.

And the sports gaming genre takes another hit. People weren't kidding when they said exclusivity deals were the worst thing to happen to sports video games.

I didn't have access to their financial data in 2011 and knew THQ was dead.
