Despite Microsoft's Move to Support It, Sony Has No Plans for Backwards Compatibility

In case you were hoping that the slim chance of old and defunct sports titles coming to the Playstation 4 was going to be a thing, Sony seems intent on not supporting backwards compatibility at the present time.

Shuhei Yoshida, Sony Computer Entertainment's head of world wide studios, told Plygon that there was little chance of the Microsoft announcement changing Sony's approach.

"The announcement didn't change," he said, "I don't think we will change our approach. The PlayStation 4 doesn't have backward compatibility."

In fact, Sony's approach seems to be approaching improving the PS4 with new products and services that aren't backwards compatibility instead.

Quote:
'"PlayStation Now works surprisingly well," Yoshida said. "But the primary purpose of that project was to create a new network service that could be used to bring PlayStation games to multiple devices including non-PlayStation devices, like Sony and Samsung televisions.

"That is an example of our adding and creating new services and initiatives."

But why doesn't Sony want to do backward compatibility on the PS4? I asked.

"Backward compatibility is hard," he said. "I won't say we'll never do it, but it's not an easy thing to do.

"If it was easy we would have done that."'

So for now, the dreams of playing old college sports titles on the Playstation 4 is a dead one. But maybe someday, maybe?

Wasn't Sony going to support that streaming service for last-generation games? Gaikai, I think?

It was a kinda big deal with the PS4 reveal two years ago now.

Yeah, they do support it, its called PSNow.

The prices are way too high though, and you have to pay for everything, even if you own the PS3 version.

Of course not, how could you possibly emulate the Cell processor?

When the PS3 was released, it offered BC for PS2 games. When they stopped with the slim model there was a small uproar. That uproar went quickly when more new games arrived. No need to go back again.

This and why would Sony give something for free that they can charge outrageous prices for?

I have zero problem with this. The faster we move on from last gen the better.

It's not that big of an issue for me, just like the backwards compatibility addition to the One isn't a big deal to me.
