Point shots by D Men

I have not seen many of these shots. Admittedly only played a few games. But very few D Man slap shots. Maybe I need to change a slider or setting. Or is this too small a sample size? I like the game so far. I am seeing a decent amount of variety in goals. My first NHL game in awhile.

Are they getting open shots and not taking them, or is your defense just not allowing looks from out there? Wouldn’t really benefit anything if they started ripping point-shots all willy-nilly for example. This could be caused by lots of things, including defender closing speed. The entire game is too fast on default.

Seen plenty of points shots on my side… Depends on your settings and all. God knows what I did to try and fix the DMen on the O side of things in 22, but out of the box DMen in 23 will take way more shots and are being way more involved in the game in 23 than these passing to forwards zombies in 22…

The DMen are way more intelligent, meaning they will take shots when it's the "right" time to do it… Try cycling the puck more and if they see an opening, they will take it…

When I say this, is that I play forward player lock, so basically I’m talking about the other team DMen and mine 😉

On default ratings, yes there are not enough cpu dmen point shots. As it was in nhl 21,22. But you can edit dmen ratings to get them to shoot from the points.

Check out PernellKarls thread on D man fix for NHL 22 it works in 23.

The only thing I'd say is don't change every D man just the top 2 offensive D men on each team with the Xfactor and shot/pass bias lowered to 2 along with offensive awareness raised by 2. You can lower the other defensman shot/pass bias a few numbers as well. If you change them all the simmed games stats were way off with every teams defensemen being the leading scorers on each team.

I'm seeing a good amount of shots from defense in my played games and simmed stats were outstanding. I have about 10 teams defensmen edited and I simned a season. The teams I edited had really good Dman stats with guys like Makar and Burns in the top 5 scoring on their teams. They took about 220 shots. Teams without edited Defense had no defensman in the top 10 and shots were around 165.

Nice to see that it works in 23 also Jake ! I thought the DMen were way better in 23 and been very busy trying to get the most out of the game on the slider front 😀

So if I understand correctly, the XFactor you have put was the SEEING EYE one ? Like in my 22 thread ? What about DMEN like Makar that has already an XFactor and a bunch of Superstar abilities, what did you do in this case ?

So thru talking with PK76 and TONS of games played, this game plays completely different when NOT playing POSITION LOCK.

Let me explain my own findings that have been confirmed by many POSITION LOCK players.

1. When playing POSITION LOCK the AI teammates actually play their positions better. meaning that YOU(if LOCKED) must play YOUR position to prevent gaps in coverage. IE: Scoring chances

2. When NOT playing PL, while switching to CPU controlled players there is a slight delay, its like a tenth of a second that causes a delay cancels out the CPU AI programming because the HUMAN player is taking over and controlling movement.

Those are the two biggest issues when playing as every player. If you have not player POSITION LOCK, try it. Learn a position and play it! You will see a HUGE AI improvement.

Yeah, this has been a bit of an issue for a handful of years when not playing with player lock on. I'm not a huge fan of player lock, just because I like to try and be creative offensively. I enjoy BAP in spurts, but I do (personally) prefer the control that I have with the full team.

My main fix, while probably not ideal, is to try not changing players in the d-zone. When you do, it's basically chaos. The CPU AI is trying to get the puck to the high-danger areas (ie. the front of the net), which is easier for them when you're getting the .10 second delay every time you change a player.

I will change when I'm trying to shut down a rush, but when you're hemmed in your own zone, the best way is to let your team work with you. This is when I end up seeing point shots, because my team is playing the defensive strategy that we're set up for, as opposed to running around.

Point shots by D Men

Just played my opening night game as the kings Vs Vegas (cpu)

Lost 3-0
Outshot 26-24
Cpu dmen had 6 shots total
Vegas scored all 3 goals on shots by dmen via point shots.

1) A slapper by pietrangelo on the PP
2) a point wrist shot by martinez, after his initial shot was blocked off the faceoff.
3) A long wrist shot helped by a screen, where quick had no chance.

This was all possible via rating edits ( some by PK and some I modified as well)

In a 10 game block, I usually see around 5-6 cpu dmen goals. So 3 in one game is an anomaly and rare, but possible due to the rating edits.

The D men are better this year that's why I only went to 2 on the shoot/pass bias and seeing eye xfactor on the top 2 or 3 defensman based on the team. When you do all of them to 1 and give it to all dmen the simmed stats were insanely unrealistic. My watered down way worked perfect.

Guys like Makar I still switched to seeing eye and removed any xfactor that reduced the chance of penalties...we don't need that lol.
Oh I almost forgot I gave the top offensive dmen the one timer slap shot perk as well.

I'm on ps5 and am thinking of uploading rosters when I'm done

The bolded part is music to my ears ! In 23 it's even better, cause almost every other game I see them (AI teammates) do something good that I’ve never seen before. I've never played more sound positionally because now I know my teammates have my back… I don’t have to do everything "myself" kinda feeling…

And like I said in the past, I never ever ask for a pass and these guys will find me if I’m opened. Again it brings the game to a whole other level…

In my slider thread there’s a video of how Alex Tuch reversed the zone exit by going behind the net and passed to me while I was going for "tha bomb", but last night, Thompson made the same play but even better, he saw that one side was clogged up so he decided to go on the other side while going behind our net, (all this time, I’m trying to give him an option for a pass) when he was about near the corner in the back of our zone, he decided NAH ! I’m gonna go back on the other side again, while going in the back of our net…. Again ! LOL !!

Never ever saw this in any NHL games, I thought it was awesome !

I never really pay attention to the defencemen shots until I read through KP and this thread. So I had a random cpu vs cpu game. Now I see what you meant. Only 4 shots total, 2 by each team. (Habs 26 shots and Rangers 40 shots) so yeah Fox only had one single shot. 4 of the 40 Rangers shots were by no other than Reaves. I think they switched the players [emoji23]
