Recognizing Changeup?

Need some help on this as it kills me when combined with a 4sfb. I always seem to be way out in front. What tips do people have for recognizing it out of the way and determining it's drop. It seems whenever I let it go it is flatter than normal and crosses my knees.

If it's low I hold off. No way for me to tell if it's a FB or CH.

i have the same problem, only thing i can say is watch for all breaking pitches and just give up the 4sfb unless its a count that you know its coming, 3-1 or 3-0 as an example.

Re: Recognizing Changeup?

That's the whole point of the Changeup, you go for it, that's the result the pitcher was looking for. I'd say just tip your cap. It really depends on the pitcher too, some pitchers just have better changeups.

The best thing to look for is the difference in speed between the 4 seam and the changeup. 8-12 MPH and you really gotta pay attention, but even then it's still tough as hell to recognize. The guys who's changeups are only 4-5 MPH off are much easier but can still fool you.

Bad advice.

Great MLB hitters have said this......look for Fastballs and adjust to the breaking stuff. Being able to adjust makes great hitters.

If your facing a guy that mixes it up well. Not much you can do.

Remember in reality most hitting coaches stress you might get 1 good pitch to hit per at bat.

Keep at it. A good slider kills me!

Re: Recognizing Changeup?

RTTS has helped me on this. The batting training is a great tool when you get the change. I try to lay off the low and outside pitches. If you can layoff long enough I have found that I will get a fastball or breaking pitch that I can handle. I have to tell my self to wait because I was always out in front when I first started playing this game. I play on pitch speed at default.
