I am new to Xbox from PS3 and was curious if I can get the updates without having the Gold membership for Xbox Live?

Or can I download to a USB drive and transfer it to he xbox?

If you're new to XBL, then you can get a free month of Live by making a gamertag. This could get you started if you'd like. I know people around here do the roster updates by USB, not sure of patches though.

With Xbox live silver account you can still get roster updates. You just can't play online.
