Rules on Eligibility for Original Score:
  • The work must be created specifically for the eligible feature-length motion picture.
  • The work must be the result of a creative interaction between the filmmaker(s) and the composer(s) and/or songwriter(s) who have been engaged to work directly on the motion picture.
  • The work’s eligibility shall be evaluated on its effectiveness, craftsmanship, creative substance and relevance to the dramatic whole.
  • The work must be recorded for use in the motion picture prior to any other usage, including public performance or exploitation through any media whatsoever.
  • In addition, scores diluted by the use of tracked themes or other preexisting music, diminished in impact by the predominant use of songs, or assembled from the music of more than one composer shall not be eligible.

Re: The 83rd Academy Awards (February 27, 2011)

248 Films are Eligible for Best Picture.

Spoiler

Because people always ask...

The list of 248 eligible films have been sent with a nominations ballot to all active and life members of the Academy “who shall vote in the order of their preference for not more than ten pictures.” The ten films receiving the highest number of votes shall become the nominations for final voting for the Best Picture award. The nominations will be announced live on January 25th 2011 at 5:30am psd..

The rules for eligibility is as follows:
  • Films must be feature length (defined as over 40 minutes)
  • Publicly exhibited by means of 35mm or 70mm film, or in a 24- or 48-frame progressive scan Digital Cinema format with a minimum projector resolution of 2048 by 1080 pixels
  • For paid admission in a commercial motion picture theater in Los Angeles County for a qualifying run of at least seven consecutive days, advertised and exploited during their Los Angeles County qualifying run in a manner considered normal and customary to the industry.
  • Films that, in any version, receive their first public exhibition or distribution in any manner other than as a theatrical motion picture release will not be eligible for Academy Awards in any category. (This includes broadcast and cable television as well as home video marketing and Internet transmission.) However, ten minutes or ten percent of the running time of a film, whichever is shorter, is allowed to be shown in a nontheatrical medium prior to the film’s theatrical release.

Re: The 83rd Academy Awards (February 27, 2011)

The WGA Awards have done a good job of predicting the winner of the screenplay awards at the Oscars. So, keep in mind that the following heavy hitters are not eligible for the WGA Award:

THE KING'S SPEECH
WINTER'S BONE
TOY STORY 3
BLUE VALENTINE
ANOTHER YEAR
THE GHOST WRITER
NOWHERE BOY
THE WAY BACK
NEVER LET ME GO
LOVE & OTHER DRUGS
MADE IN DAGENHAM
GREEN ZONE
BIUTIFUL
SCOTT PILGRIM VS. THE WORLD

WGA and Oscar Screenplay winners in the past four years:

2009 Hurt Locker won Original WGA and Oscars
2008 Milk won Original WGA and Oscars
2008 Slumdog Millionaire won Adapted WGA and Oscars
2007 Juno won Original WGA and Oscars
2007 No Country For Old Men won Adapted WGA and Oscars
2006 Little Miss Sunshine won Original WGA and Oscars
2006 The Departed won Adapted WGA and Oscars

And on the list goes.

So, do not expect much from the list of ineligibles for the WGA in the Oscar Screenplay categories.

Re: The 83rd Academy Awards (February 27, 2011)

Hmmmm.....Javier Bardem (No Country For Old Men) gets a Best Actor Nom for a performance in a foreign film.

A little surprised that Jeff Bridges got a nomination after the Golden Globe "True Grit" snub(s).

Good to see Hailee Steinfeld get one.

The only Best Picture noms I haven't seen are True Grit and Winter's Bone. Two movies I wanted to see so I'll make sure to do that before the awards show.

Have wanted to watch The Illusionist for months now and it seems that many say How To Train... is great so gotta make sure to watch those too.

I hope most of these find a way to theaters again if they are away.
