Lakers hire Mike Brown as their next coach
    20110525_025409_dn25-mikeBrown.jpg
In this May 3, 2010 photo, then Cleveland Cavaliers coach Mike Brown screams at his team in the third quarter of Game 2 against the Boston Celtics in the second round of the playoffs.

The Lakers and former Cleveland Cavaliers coach Mike Brown reportedly agreed on a four-season, $18.25 million contract today, an unexpected choice to replace retiring Hall of Fame coach Phil Jackson after a relatively quick search.

Brown, 41, coached the LeBron James-led Cavaliers for five seasons, taking the team to the NBA Finals once and the Eastern Conference finals twice. He is known as a defensive-minded coach, which could be what attracted the Lakers to him. "If you're building a championship team, the DNA always has to start on the defensive end of the floor. Always," superstar guard Kobe Bryant said after the Dallas Mavericks ousted the Lakers from the playoffs earlier this month. "I'm a firm believer in that. I don't believe in building a championship team on offense. It has to be built on defense and rebounding. Period."

Brown was the NBA's coach of the year after leading the Cavaliers to a league-best 66-16 record in 2008-09. He helped to guide Cleveland to a NBA-best 61-21 mark in 2009-10, but was fired after the Cavaliers' second straight loss in the conference finals.

He spent this season as an analyst for ESPN.

Brown served as an assistant coach with the Indiana Pacers for two seasons before the Cavaliers hired him in 2005. He also was an assistant with the San Antonio Spurs for three seasons and the Washington Wizards for two.

Lakers sign former UCLA Bruin Jason Kapono
      111209jasonkapono650.jpg

EL SEGUNDO - The Los Angeles Lakers have signed free agent guard/forward Jason Kapono, it was announced today. Per team policy, terms of the agreement were not released.

Kapono, an eight-year NBA veteran, comes to the Lakers with the sixth highest career three-point field goal percentage (.437) in NBA history. A two-time winner of the Foot Locker Three-Point Shootout during All-Star Weekend in 2007 and 2008, Kapono was also a member of the NBA Champion Miami Heat in 2006-07, leading the NBA with a .514 three-point field goal percentage that currently ranks as the sixth-highest single season total in NBA history.

Selected by the Cleveland Cavaliers in the second round (31st overall) of the 2003 NBA Draft after concluding his four-year college career at UCLA ranked third on the Bruins’ all-time scoring list, Kapono has played in 482 career NBA games with Cleveland, Charlotte, Miami, Toronto and Philadelphia, averaging 6.9 points (.443 FG%, .437 3FG%), 1.7 rebounds and 0.8 assists in 18.3 minutes.

Lakers sign free agent forward Josh McRoberts
        ts_111214joshmcroberts650.jpg

Los Angeles Lakers have signed 6-10 free agent forward Josh McRoberts, it was announced today. Per team policy, terms of the agreement were not released.

McRoberts, a four-year NBA veteran, averaged career-highs in points (7.4), rebounds (5.3) and assists (2.1) while appearing in 72 games (51 starts) with the Indiana Pacers last season. In 155 career NBA games (54 starts), McRoberts is averaging 5.2 points on .525 shooting from the field, 3.8 rebounds and 1.4 assists in 15.7 minutes.

An early entry candidate for the 2007 NBA Draft following his sophomore season at Duke, McRoberts was originally selected by the Portland Trail Blazers with the seventh pick in the second round (37th overall) before being traded to the Pacers following his rookie year.

Recruited to Duke by Hall-of-Fame coach Mike Krzyzewski, McRoberts, the 2005 Morgan Wooten Award winner as McDonald’s High School All-American Player of the Year, was named to the All-ACC Freshman Team in 2006, the All-ACC Second Team in 2007 and became just the second Blue Devil in school history to be named team captain as a sophomore.

A closer look reveals that he's among the league's more efficient players, thanks to a TS% of .608 in 2010-11, good for 19th in the NBA. In fact, only 25 NBA players checked in above .600, with Andrew Bynum (.606) ranking right behind McBobs. He got there by hitting 54.5% of his field goals, 38.3% of his threes (though he took only 60) and 73.9% of his free throws.

Finishing strong at the rim in transition is a particular strength, as are put-back buckets from the weak side, as McRoberts is unlikely to receive post up opportunities on the strong side particularly on a team that features Bynum, Pau Gasol and Kobe Bryant. He'll be asked to hit an open jumper from the wing, which is something he'll need to improve from last season. And here's where we realize that one reason he's so efficient is that most of his shots come at the rim.

Regardless, the bulk of his production in L.A. should come as a result of using his athleticism and size to clean up the glass or get out on the break and finish. McRoberts won't be asked to create offense off the dribble or initate too much from the wing (we'll see how that midrange jumper looks when he arrives) but instead try to compliment the best Lakers however Brown directs him to do so.

Lakers come to terms with forward Troy Murphy
          ts_111218troymurphy650.jpg

EL SEGUNDO - The Los Angeles Lakers have signed free agent forward/center Troy Murphy, it was announced today. Per team policy, terms of the agreement were not released.

Murphy, who has averaged a double-double in five of his 10 NBA seasons, owns career averages of 11.6 points and 8.4 rebounds in 656 games (481 starts) with Golden State, Indiana, New Jersey and Boston.

Ranked 16th among active players in rebounds per game and 29th in three-point field goal percentage (.389), the 6’11” New Jersey native finished the 2008-09 season as the only player in NBA history to rank in the top five league-wide in both rebounds per game (2nd/11.8) and three-point field goal percentage (3rd/.450).

Selected by the Golden State Warriors in the first round (14th overall) of the 2001 NBA Draft, the two-time consensus All-American out of Notre Dame has finished among the NBA’s top-10 league leaders in rebounds per game five times and has recorded 218 career double-doubles.

Lakers sign draft picks Morris and Goudelock
            111209morris_goudelock650.jpg

The Lakers signed rookie guards Darius Morris and Andrew Goudelock, it was announced on Monday. Per team policy, terms of the agreements were not released.

Morris, selected by the Lakers in the second round (41st overall) of the 2011 NBA Draft, appeared in 67 games (53 starts) in two seasons at the University of Michigan, averaging 9.9 points, 2.9 rebounds and 4.8 assists. The 51st Wolverine to be drafted into the NBA, Morris was an All-Big Ten Third Team selection last season as well as just the third player in Michigan history to record a triple-double (12 points, 10 rebounds, 11 assists) 1/30/11 vs. Iowa. The first Wolverine to lead the Big Ten in assists since Gary Grant in 1988, Morris set a U-of-M record for assists in a single season (235) last year while leading the team to an eight seed in the 2011 NCAA Tournament.

Goudelock, selected by the Lakers in the second round (46th overall) of the 2011 NBA Draft, appeared in 140 games (124 starts) in four seasons at the College of Charleston, averaging 18.4 points, 3.3 rebounds and 3.0 assists.
The all-time leading scorer in College of Charleston history (2,571) and third all-time in Southern Conference history, Goudelock became the 62nd player in NCAA Division I men’s basketball history to record 2,500 career points and ranks 39th all-time in career scoring. As a senior, he averaged 23.7 points, ranking fourth nationally among NCAA Division I scoring leaders while earning All-America honorable mention honors from The Associated Press.

The 2011-12 NBA season gets underway with a terrific opening night match up featuring the Los Angeles Lakers under new Head Coach, Mike Brown hosting the Oklahoma City Thunder with the dynamic duo of all-stars Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook. The Thunder come in to this season as one of the early favorites in the Western Conference while the Lakers are looking to right the wrong of last season's embarrassing playoff sweep at the hands of the Dallas Mavericks. Gone are Lamar Odom, Shannon Brown, Theo Ratliff and Joe Smith and in their place, Jason Kapono, Josh McRoberts, Troy Murphy and rookies Andrew Goudelock and Darius Morris. For the Thunder, gone is Nate Robinson and Byron Mullens, but income Lazar Hayward (via trade) and rookie Reggie Jackson. We hope you all enjoy tonight's opening game.
