How important are Catchers?

I'm just getting to the point where backup Catchers are starting to get some playing time.
And I notice that the starting pitchers are seemingly having rougher outings with the backup catcher in place.
Is this just a figment of my imagination?

No. There is a hidden attribute for game calling, I'm pretty sure. May I point you to this thread? I'm sure it would help.

Here's the thread.
