So the focus is on defense but

I think defense will still be bad unless EA still has a few cards they are not showing.

what do these plays have in common that (unless EA is waiting to drop a bombshell) is not present in Madden?

They are dynamic blitzes. In other words, it is the same "play" but how it unfolds alters based on what the offense does.

In Madden if you call a blitz, the blitz will unfold exactly how it displays on the playcall screen everytime and this is not realistic. On the offensive side of the ball option routes are included in the game, but the defensive equivalent is nowhere to be found.

Simply put, we are at the stage where these types of blitzes should be in the game. These new consoles have the processing power to handle the calculations (unless EA is lying or overhyping the processing capability of Madden next gen and they would never do that right?).

Related to this is the need to reinsert the create a play feature (even if only for defense). Remember the reason we were given for their removal last gen? The AI could not handle them. Well with "real AI 2.0" that should no longer be a problem right? Right?

Look I am a Ravens fan; I am a defensive guy at heart regardless of how many deep bombs Flacco chunks who the hell knows where. Each week I want to be able to devise blitzes that are designed specifically to beat or exploit my upcoming opponent.

I'm looking forward to this Madden, but I am no fool; EA is not serious about developing a realistic and challenging defense. All they want is to appear to do so by adding a new coat of paint and bringing under the hood elements of the game to the surface and calling it a new feature. Tackle cone? wtf is that?

And to be fair blitzes that vary based on what the offense does is anything but fundamentals.

I just want to see the game take that next step. Based on what I've seen the defense has been improved but I would not call it an overhaul.
