Do safeties not matter in Madden anymore?

Me and my friend were talking about this last year on madden 18 and it seems to be brought up a lot between us for 19 also. But other than maybe run defense it seems your safeties are like non existent a lot of times, especially in the passing game.

I got 2 safeties (one a 90 rating and the other 88) and both are zone specialists...well when I play zone they well like I said are no where to be found or they let receivers past them a lot.

So just curious if me and my friend were the only ones to think about this ?

I find safeties to be indispensable.

I just lost to the cpu in the last second due to my safeties. There was 1 minute left and they were down by 3, and i call prevent defense and yet somehow one of their receivers got passed my safety or my safety didn’t cover his zone.

Yeah kinda sucks lol

Re: Do safeties not matter in Madden anymore?

If I'm running a zone scheme, I'd rather have elite S than CB. I ran some CFM games with BUF and holy cow, that S tandem made its presence known.

It may depend on play calls and matchups, perhaps, but I get lots of mileage out of good safeties and can feel the deficit in coverage created by bad ones.

Heck, yesterday, Karl Joseph blew his assignment in quarters coverage, which I'm sure has something to do with his low zone coverage rating. He may force me into more of a single-high look than my desired two-high look, which I really like from a strategic standpoint. I didn't have to make that move when working with Poyer and Hyde.

Just my .02 on that one.

Byard and Vaccaro have served me well in my Titans franchise.

Derwin James has 28 career INTs for me. 5 this season. He is rated a 94. My other safety has zero INTs this season and has not had many lately the past few seasons but he has had 5-6 before. He rated a 97 and is a generated player. Always near the top in tackles. Been great players for me.

I see Pro's in MUT youtube videos often use Deion Sanders, etc at safety rather than corner. That should tell you how important safety play can be.

Safeties are great this year and if you arent getting as many on the field as possible you are probably doing it wrong.
