Will New Faces Bring New Attitude to Seattle?

Felix Hernandez walks to his locker after a spring training bullpen session. The usually talkative Mariner veteran is keeping to himself, and seems to be hurrying to leave the facility. To his right is Domingo Santana, also stoic, at his locker. "It'll come" says Felix, now grinning, "but right now there's a lot of new people in this locker room, and none of us really know each other. Once we start playing, and hanging out every day it'll be cool." It's not just the teammates who are unfamiliar with each other. The dedicated fans of Seattle Mariners spring training, who flock to the sunny skies of Arizona every year for weeks of sunshine and baseball away from the cold and grey Seattle skies, are just as unfamiliar with the new club. "I know Felix, and Mitch." says one fan when asked what she thinks about the players on the team this year, "Oh and isn't Ichiro still here?" says her excited son. Yes Ichiro is still here, but gone are the likes of Robinson Cano, Nelson Cruz, James Paxton, Edwin Diaz, and Jean Segura. All of those names were all-stars that the Mariners jettisoned after a disappointing second half to last season, and the organization decided it was time for a different approach to end the longest post-season drought in North American professional sports. The new team thrown together is a roster full of what seems like missed potential. Domingo Santana was a 30 HR hitter for the Brewers two years ago, then lost his place in the lineup. Tim Beckham, a former #1 overall pick, who has never lived up to the billing, Jay Bruce, a one time feared slugger, who has succumbed to injuries. Dan Vogelbach, a Ruthian looking slugger who has yet to put it together. "Everyone on this roster has a chip on their shoulder." Says manager Scott Servais. "Everyone of them have been called a failure, or a bust, you never lived up to your potential." he continued. The Mariners are counting on that chip to be competitive this season. If the players on this roster can tap into their potential, they can surprise some in the AL this season, the playoffs look to be a long shot, and another season will probably come and go without a playoff game in Seattle, but these Mariners could be a fun watch on offense, and a disaster late in ball games. Good? probably not, but the 2019 Mariners should be entertaining if nothing else.

Encarnacion Hits 2 Dingers as Mariners Open Campaign with Win

Oakland - The Mariners 2019 season got off to a resounding start on Wednesday. Edwin Encarnacion hit two three-run home runs, and Marco Gonzales hurled six solid innings as the Mariners took game 1 from the A's 8-2. Encarnacion wasn't even sure he would be on the Mariners roster to open camp, but the slugger was focused nonetheless on the task at hand in the opener. "I'm just here to contribute" Edwin said after the game. "Whatever uniform I am wearing I am going to give that team everything I've got." What Encarnacion has is a hot bat that opposing pitchers will fear in the middle of this Mariner lineup. The two teams will be back at it tomorrow in Oakland to wrap up their quick two game opening series. It'll be Mariner rookie Yusei Kikuchi (0-0, 0.00 ERA) making his major league debut against Mike Fiers (12-8, 3.56 ERA).

Chapman Slams A's to Series Split

Oakland - Yusei Kikuchi got little help from his defense in his Major League debut. The Mariners committed three errors, two by shortstop Tim Beckham, and the A's made them pay dearly when Matt Chapman took a Kikuchi pitch into left field with the bases loaded as the A's gave him a not so warm of a welcome to the show with a 10-4 win. Only three of Kikuchi's eight runs were earned by the Athletics, who salvaged a split with the Mariners in the opening two game series. These two teams will now get a week off before their next game. For Seattle they will have to face the world champion Boston Red Sox at T-Mobile Park. That game will have an early start time of 4:08 pm.

Sale Dominates Mariners to Ruin Opener

Seattle - The newly branded T-Mobile Park was packed full, the stadium, now with a hint of pink in places was still the same beautiful scene as always for opening day. Then Chris Sale and the world champs quickly tamed the mood. Sale hurled a three hit, 15 strikeout masterpiece to shut out the Mariners, and send fans home in a foul mood with a 5-0 win. Despite a great performance from Marco Gonzales, the Mariners could not figure out the Red Sox ace for the entire afternoon and into late evening. Seattle will look for a better outcome tomorrow when they send Yusei Kikuchi (0-1, 7.36 ERA) to the mound to face David Price (16-7, 3.58 ERA) tomorrow at 7:10 pm at T-Mobile Park.

Mariners Stage Epic Comeback to Walk Off Red Sox

Seattle - The Seattle Mariners overcame another shaky start by rookie Yusei Kikuchi, who again was not helped out be errors behind him, and chased early. However the Mariners battled, and got to starter David Price, with Ryon Healy's three run homer getting the Mariners back in the game after being down 7-1. The M's bullpen was then able to lock down the potent Red Sox lineup, and in the ninth inning the Mariners were able to get to Red Sox closer Matt Barnes. Domingo Santana ultimately drove in the winning run with a two run single, and the Mariner crowd was able to leave happy with an 8-7 win.

Re: True to the Blue | Mariners Show '19 Franchise

Mariners Win Record Breaking Marathon

Seattle - The clock had turned from Saturday to Sunday. Wade LeBlanc, who was supposed to be getting the start later this afternoon had just finished up five innings of relief work, and the Red Sox and Mariners still couldn't figure out how to push a run across after 23 innings. "I thought it was never going to end." said shortstop Tim Beckham, who ultimately scored the winning run. "Dave came up to Alex and I after one of those innings, after midnight, and asked us how much longer we wanted to go." Said Scott Servais after the longest scoreless game in Major League history. "We have a ball game tomorrow, well actually this afternoon, so that kind of played into things. If we hadn't have scored there I don't know if we would've kept going." Luckily for everyone involved Tim Beckham ripped a double to begin the 25th frame, and Dee Gordon was able to get a bunt down to move him over to 3rd with one out. Then Mallex Smith came to the plate. Smith became the first player since Cesar Gutierrez, of the Detroit Tigers in 1970 to record seven hits in a game, and Red Sox reliever Hector Velazquez apparently didn't want to see him get number 8 as a wild pitch went bouncing away from catcher Blake Swihart, and at 12:32 am Sunday morning, Tim Beckham slid across the plate with the winning run. "Never in my life have I seen anything like that, at any level." said Servais "Now if you don't mind I'm gonna cut this short and try to get some sleep, we've got a game in a few hours." As far as that game there is no word on who will be pitching later on today. Scheduled starter Wade LeBlanc ended up pitching, and the entire bullpen was gone through in this one, so there will no doubt be some roster moves before tomorrow's er.... today's game. First pitch is scheduled for 1:10 pm.

Re: True to the Blue | Mariners Show '19 Franchise

Mariners Slug Way to Series Win Over Defending Champs

Seattle - The Mariners crushed three home runs, and Daniel Vogelbach drove in two RBIs with a pair of doubles to support the Mariners patch-work pitching staff in their 6-4 win Sunday afternoon. Just hours after the Marathon the night before came to a close, The Mariners called up rookie Erik Swanson to make his Major League debut, after they had to use Wade LeBlanc in the extra innings affair the night before. Swanson was more than up to the task, going 7.0 innings to help save the Mariners ravaged bullpen, while only giving up one earned run. "It was everything I hoped it would be" said the young rookie after the game. Swanson knows his time in the bigs will be short lived. As he'll most likely be headed back to Tacoma tomorrow to get ready for their season that kicks off this Thursday, but for now he's just soaking in the moment. Seattle also made another move before the game calling up reliever Matt Festa from Tacoma, and sending down Brandon Brennan, as they needed fresh arms in the pen to get through this one. Festa ended up grabbing his first career save after Anthony Swarzak got into trouble with three walks in the 9th inning. Seattle now will get some much needed rest before they're back in action tomorrow night. It will be the first King's Court of the season when Felix Hernandez (8-14, 5.55 ERA) faces off with the much maligned Matt Harvey (7-9, 4.94 ERA). First pitch from T-Mobile Park will be at 7:10 pm.

Re: True to the Blue | Mariners Show '19 Franchise

Brewers scrambling after losing NL MVP

Milwaukee - The Milwaukee Brewers had high hopes of building on their season a year ago that saw them winning the NL Central, and taking the Dodgers all seven games before eventually falling in the NLCS. Those hopes can still materialize, but they'll have to do so without the reigning MVP. Christian Yelich will be on the IL for an extended time after fouling a ball off his foot in the opener, suffering a fracture in the process. Right now the time table is 6-8 weeks for Yelich. A significant blow for the Brewers this early in the year, as they'll need to tread water until his return.
