How are the penalties in NHL20?

Just wondering as I remember I was enjoying NHL19 until they played with the penalties and it was unplayable for me. Either 500 penalties or nothing if I turn it off. Did they fix it back to where it was before they made it a tripping fest last year?

Re: How are the penalties in NHL20?

I had it at this setting , for longest time, then I realised it wasn't fair , I was getting away with stuff that I shouldn't. so I thought about and re-vision the penalties to this kind, raised penalties: 4 (not 3).

Fighting: 2 (Maxed)
Post Whistle Rules: Authentic
Penalties: 4 (Maxed) (old) (3)

Penalties

CPU Penalties: 35 (old) (25)
CPU Teammate Penalties: 35 (old) (25)
Tripping: CPU: 10 / Human: 10 (old) (CPU: 5 / Human: 5)
Slashing: CPU: 5 / Human: 5
Elbowing: CPU: 25 / Human: 25
High Sticking: CPU: 75 / Human: 75 (old) (CPU: 45 / Human: 45)
Cross Checking: CPU: 45 / Human: 45 (All-Star) (CPU: 75 / Human: 75) (SuperStar)
Boarding: CPU: 45 / Human: 45
Charging: CPU: 45 / Human: 45 (old) (CPU: 40 / Human: 40)
Delay of Game: CPU: 40 / Human: 40 (Old) (CPU: 30 / Human: 30)
Holding: CPU: 30 / Human: 30 (old) (CPU: 25 / Human: 25)
Hooking: CPU: 25 / Human: 25
Interference: CPU: 95 / Human: 95 (old) (CPU: 85 / Human: 85)

u can see evolution of it here

with this new settings , I get 6-9 penalties.

Re: How are the penalties in NHL20?

Tripping is still a problem, but try to avoid spamming stick check.

This is probably the biggest problem people constantly have(including me) is we tend to stick check probably 9 times out of 10 and majority of those times we do it when its completely inappropriate like when we are just to the side and slightly behind the player with the puck.

but tripping in the game still needs a lot of tweaking because there are many times where you may just tap the blade of the skate with your stick and in Real Life the player would not fall over but in the game they will.

Plentiful. A little too plentiful especially tripping. Had a game two days ago (6 min) quarters where only 14 minutes (scales to 6 min quarters of course) of the game total were played at every strength. On the bright side it’s not just the user as the cpu commits a ton of penalties as well. I prefer they don’t patch it as I know they’ll break it and we’ll be back where we were two years ago where the CPU takes zero penalties. I can live with 8-10 penalties a game as long as the CPU is accounting for about half of them as opposed to zero

The stick collision with player models has improved in '20, but it's still got issues for sure like you said.

One area of particular improvement is the lack of contact when transitioning out of DSS. In '19, it was atrocious - letting go of DSS only to have a player come in contact with your stick in the last frame of letting go - so infuriating.

That has been fixed up a lot in '20 - still needs tweaking IMO but far better than '19.

I'm lucky if I get 1 power play the whole game. I have penalties at 4 and CPU and Teammate penalties at 50. The CPU seems to get around 3-5 Power plays a game to my 1 if I'm lucky.

I think they need to reimagine penalties altogether.

In NHL 20, penalties are almost always accidental, whereas in the real NHL, they are usually intentional.

Also, the penalty variety sucks

Re: How are the penalties in NHL20?

You have to ramp up the individual CPU and CPU AI teammate penalty sliders. I'm still not seeing enough with the main slider at 4/4 and the two individual sliders on CPU 70/CPU AI TM 65.

I always like the CPU 5 clicks higher because I commit more penalties as a user player.

I will say however, stick checks/trips seem much improved this year to me.
