"The Game Honors Toughness": Boston Celtics NBA 2K20 MyLeague

The title of this myleague is a quote taken from Boston Celtics head coach Brad Stephens after a loss to the Utah Jazz last season. There will be a more in-depth review of the 2018-19 season later.

The Boston Celtics will be the main focus for the myleague. I'll also maintain control over the other 29 NBA teams so that there aren't any strange trades. As for the games themselves, I plan on playing all the games, but will only do reviews for about two per week. Up to three or four games from varying NBA teams will be reviewed each week as well. I'll also keep track of injuries, transactions, coach hirings and firings, etc.

Also, rosters have been tweaked to reflect injuries and suspensions that occurred within the first few weeks of the season. For example Stephen Curry, who only played four games before injuring his hand, will start the season with that hand injury.

I hope to play at least four seasons so I can shape the roster to my liking and see if said roster will be capable of winning an NBA title.

The success the Boston Celtics had in the 2017-18 season boosted expectations for the 2018-19 season. Already having lost Gordon Hayward in the first game of the previous season, the Celtics then lost Kyrie Irving for the remainder of the regular season and postseason because knee surgery. Surprisingly, the Celtics made it all the way to the Eastern Conference Finals where they fell to the Cleveland Cavaliers in Game 7. Having made it that far without their championship tested point guard and All-Star forward boosted expectations of what was to come for the following season. After all, the Celtics had the aforementioned Hayward and Irving to play with the blossoming talent of young wing players Jaylen Brown and Jayson Tatum.

The following season got off to a rough start as Irving worked his way back from injury with Hayward doing the same. Rumors began to fly that the young players wanted more playing time. Shortly afterwards, the team's chemistry issues came into focus as a result of their seemingly selfish play. Ultimately, the Celtics finished six games worse than the previous season at 49-33 which was good for fourth in the Eastern Conference.

Even though the Celtics swept their first round opponent, the Indiana Pacers, their playoff run ended in embarrassment after getting dominated by the Milwaukee Bucks in the following round. The Celtics 112-90 victory over the Bucks in Game 1 turned out to be an aberration. Bucks star forward Giannis Antetokounmpo, who was held to 22 points on 7-of-21 shooting in the first game, averaged 29.7 points on 57% shooting the rest of the way and his team dominated the series.

With the season officially over, the losses continued to pile up for the Celtics. Irving, who had faced rumors that he would leave when the season was over, did so during the offseason. This was considered a slap in the face to Boston's fan base since Irving had verbally committed to remaining with the franchise just last summer. Along with Irving, the team lost other veterans to free agency and through trades. Al Horford signed with division rival the Philadelphia 76ers while Marcus Morris Sr. signed with the New York Knicks. Aron Baynes and the draft rights to Ty Jerome were traded to the Phoenix Suns for a 2020 Bucks protected first round pick. These departures left the Celtics' once lauded depth decimated. A later trade for another All-Star point guard would begin to somewhat right the ship for the Celtics.
