Unified Boxing Federation (Glory Days Boxing)

I recently purchased a cards and dice boxing sim called Glory Days Boxing (thread in the Combat Sports section). I decided to start my own boxing federation to give the fights some meaning instead of just a bunch of one-offs.

There is a video in the Glory Days Boxing thread (post #18) that describes how a "career league" can be set up and managed. Please watch that video before asking questions about how this works. Most of the answers are in the video.

With that out of the way, there are a few notable differences between my fictional universe and the one set up in the video.

1. I picked 41 heavyweights at random from the 100 available in the game. In the video, Anthony describes using debut years to determine which 41 fighters to start with. I wanted fighters from vastly different eras to square off so I went in a different direction.

2. For now at least, I'm doing 5 fights per game month rather than a random number between 1 and 6. 5 feels like a good number and I'll be getting 10 boxers per month a fight which I think is important to establish some records and begin separating guys in the rankings.

Speaking of rankings, the initial 41 boxers were separated into 3 groups at random:

1. 20 boxers to make up spots 21-40 in the ranking of challengers.

2. 10 boxers to be ranked 11-20.

3. 11 boxers to be the top 10 and the champion. The champion was randomly selected between the boxer's in the group with the most Ring General Stars (a quick look 1-10 scale in the game to tell the good fighters from the bad), Two boxers in this group had 10 stars (James Jeffries and Joe Frazier). Jeffries was randomly selected to be the initial champion when starting this.

I named my "league" the Unified Boxing Federation (UBF) and picked a start date of January 2000. In my universe, the UBF is the only federation and all fights prior to its existence were amateur bouts.

That gives you the basics. I will use this thread to update rankings and give a brief look at the results from the matches each month.

Initially, I will give you the full list of 40 challengers but in future posts only the top 10 will be listed. As in the video, the top 10 are given 15 Ranking Points (RP) to start, 11-20 are given 7 and 21-40 are given 0. I gave the champion 20 RP.

Winning against a higher rated fighter gets you 5 points.
Losing to a lower rated fighter costs you 5.
Winning against a lower rated fighter gets you 2 RP.
Losing to a higher rated fighter costs you 2.
In a draw, the lower rated fighter gets 2 points and the higher rated gets 1.

Fighters can only fight against opponents in their group (1-10, 11-20 and 21-40). Only fighters in the top 10 can challenge for the belt.

Fighters will retire (I haven't quite sorted out a system for this yet) and when they do a fighter from the remaining 59 that aren't in my universe yet will be randomly selected to replace them.

All bouts will be scheduled for 10 rounds except for title fights which will be 12 rounds. I will use generic referees and judges on all fight cards except for those that include a title fight. For those cards, I will randomly select 3 referees to cover the 5 fights and I'll also randomly choose 4 judges to cover them.

Chris Arreola defeats James Braddock by Unanimous Decision
Judges: 97-93, 98-92, 98-97
This one was well fought but Arreola was in control from the start and was only going to lose if he was knocked out. There were no knockdowns in the fight. Braddock was warned for holding in the 3rd, suffered a gash above his left eye in the 4th and swelling to his right eye in the 6th.

Max Schmeling defeats Tyrell Biggs by Unanimous Decision
Judges: 98-91, 98-91, 100-89
Schmeling was in complete control from the opening bell, landing 119 punches to 46 for Biggs. A testament to his heart, Biggs survived knockdowns in the 7th and 10th rounds. He also had cuts to his left eye and cheek with the cheek worsening as the fight progressed. Biggs was warned for a rabbit punch in the 7th round. The fight was delayed for about 30 seconds in the 7th after a fan stormed the ring. He was led out of the building by police.

Bob Satterfield defeats Arthur Pelkey by TKO at 1:46 of Round 1
The "Bombardier" spoiled Pelkey's UBF debut, making quick work of the Canadian without allowing Pelkey to land a single punch.

David Tua defeats Ken Norton by Split Decision
Judges: 97-94, 96-95, 94-95
The best fight of the night came just before the main event. Tua cut Norton's right eye in the opening round but Norton kept Tua off of it for the rest of the night. The difference in the fight likely came in round 4 when Norton was the victim of the bout's only knockdown.Tua landed 93 punches to Norton's 90, evidence of the quality of the match. Norton will likely be looking for a rematch in the coming months.

Lennox Lewis defeats Ray Mercer by Unanimous Decision
Judges: 99-91, 99-91, 97-92
The main event didn't quite live up to its billing. Lewis pummeled Mercer to the tune of a 113-45 advantage in punches landed. The only slip up for Lewis came in the 7th when he was briefly knocked down by Mercer. "Merciless" was begging for mercy finishing the night with a badly swollen left eye after being knocked to the canvas twice - in the 4th and 7th stanzas. Both fighters were issued a warning for continuing after the bell after the 6th round as tempers boiled over.

Notes: I wasn't thrilled with Frazier getting a rematch already but that's the way the dice fell and I decided not to override it.

If Jeffries wins, he will not fight again until 2001. My rule is that incumbent champions must defend their title a minimum of 2 times in a calendar year. The maximum is 3 title defenses in a calendar year. I will force Frazier to defend the title once before the end of 2000 if he wins.
