This opening day was unlike any other in the history of the game. During the offseason, Major League Baseball held the first-ever fantasy-style player draft.

The reasoning behind this was to try and level an ever-widening gap in the large and small-market teams. A balancing of the scales if you will. Every team was given a random slot in a snake-like draft. So that hopefully, no team got a truly unfair advantage.

After it was all said and done the front office of the Miami Marlins had thought they had done a decent enough job during the draft to be able to field what would hopefully competitive team for the upcoming 2021 season.

That was before having to face one of the top young arms in all of baseball on opening day in Jacob deGrom. I seriously don't think that any of the best lineups in the history of this game could have done much more than the Marlins did against him in the season opener.

He was nearly unhittable against the Marlins. Going six outstanding innings. He struck out 11 batters, walked just three, and allowed just two runs to score.

The Rays bullpen was just as good as their ace. As they combined to pitch three innings in relief. Allowing just one run on two hits. The Rays bullpen also combined to strike out another eight Marlins batters.

On the flip side of the scorecard, was the Marlins. They had a young gun of their own going in the season opener in Walker Buehler. If deGrom was at the top of the mountain, Walker Buehler was at the very bottom of the canyon.

Buehler went just four innings, allowing four runs, on four hits, and five walks. He struck out not a single batter over that time.

Offensively for the Marlins, it was the Brian Anderson show. As he drove in all three of the team's runs in the home/season opener.

If the Marlins are going to be seen as anything of a threat to their NL East counterparts this season, they will have to quickly put this game behind them and show some grit and fight going forward.
