Re: GNP sweeps
The issue with these mechanics is the randomness of it. It’s the LACK OF CONTROL a player has over them happening.
Whether it’s the posture timer, or the GnP sweeps, or the automatic guard retaining. The issue is that they happen automatically, instead of giving players the freedom to choose when to do them. When things happen automatically, it ruins the immersion. It takes out the ability to plan or strategize when you can’t do things intentionally, on command. It makes the player feel like they don’t have control over their fighter.
That’s the entire issue, and I wrote a post on this... essentially explaining that the reason Undisputed 3’s grappling felt so much better than any EA system was the feeling of CONTROL over your fighter. Take away this feeling of control, you take away the immersion. On UD3, you could make your fighter visually do things, such as “hold on” to your opponent, at will. You could let go. You could choose when - or when NOT - to reverse them. All at the snap of a finger. On EA, the feeling of control has slowly been taken away.
And it’s culminated with UFC 4, a game where (especially the GnP) feels almost like you’re just watching things happen. Almost every crucial aspect of the GnP system has been outsourced to automatic functions. You posture down automatically. Sweeps happen automatically. You retain guard automatically.
Some times these things may benefit you - I mean who doesn’t want to magically retain guard after blocking a punch from bottom HG? The problem is, I want to choose when it happens. Let me control my fighter. Maybe I didn’t want to retain guard. Maybe I didn’t want to sweep my opponent yet. Maybe I wanted to set up a triangle. Maybe I want to intentionally let my opponent gas themselves because I’m just that alpha and elite in my understanding of health meters and the clock.
This is where UD3 separated itself.
