Simple stat question

Why are “hits” so important that a stat is compiled. Is it important? If a team averages more hits then another team…. Is it meaningful?

I wouldn't say it's significantly meaningful. But it's certainly a metric that can determine how physical a player is. Some bigger players don't hit at all so you really can't go off of size.

The stat is mostly for show BUT for game play it makes HUGE difference. When playing I notice CPU players make mistakes when they are hit multiple times causing TO's.

In real life HITS can show how engaged a player or team is physically---however , some modern pundits, like Jeff Marek, point out that since you can only hit a player when the opposition has possesion --it could be a negative stat (ie; your team may be running around "hitting", could suggest that your team dosnt have the puck as much as your opponent)
