    Discussing Banned Members

Hey guys, I'm wondering if there has been any thought given to a side forum or thread about banned members where the mod can explain why the user was banned and reveal how long. It could help end the debates and discussions that occur in other threads (the OT thread notably), even if the banned forum was done in a way where members couldn't reply.

It was just something I noticed on another site, they called it "village of the banned" and it looked like it ran pretty smoothly. An example would be if I was banned for inappropriate language while in the NCAAF forum, a thread titled "l3ulvl" would appear in the village of the banned forum and the mod who banned me would just type "inappropriate language in NCAAF, 1 month ban" or something similar.

When someone gets banned they receive a Red Card first. You can read why the member was banned by looking at their infraction.

This is true, but not for all bannings (is that a word?). I have come across a banned member and never found a red carded post in their recent post history. I assume it was most likely a PM attacking a mod, but I never knew exactly what it was. It would be nice if there was some sort of organized menu of recently banned members or something like that and read their red cards. Not only would this be for entertainment purposes, it would actually be helpful IMO. We have the TOS, but there is no real examples in the TOS (that I know of), and this would provide concrete examples of why users were banned.

I think a forum is a bad idea. 1) 90% or more of banned users have red cards that explain why they were banned. Some fall through the cracks but most have cards. 2) Alot of decisions regarding bans are at the discretion of the mod. The last thing I want is some guy who is mad their friend was banned calling me out in a forum and forcing me to explain why this person was banned. 3) Either Mil would have to make changes to the forum that caused a thread to be created everytime someone is banned or every mod would have to create one when they ban someone. I'm not a fan of adding more work to a job that is completely volunteer work and does not involve any payment.

Back in the day, we had a thread called the OS Graveyard. When someone got banned, it was posted in there. I forget what happened to it.

But at one point, we had a thread for it. Obviously, it didn't work is my point.

                Re: Discussing Banned Members

It seems to me that mods parading the dead through the streets of downtown would fuel perceptions of arrogance and disrespect, and make the relationship between mods and other posters combative.

I don't like the idea at all

I don't like the idea of having a seperate forum.

However, the mods should probably realize that when a long-time member like Cebby or Born gets banned without receiving a red card (for their last straw as far as I can tell), chances are someone is going to bring it up in a thread sooner or later.

I totally see where you are coming from, but you could say the same for (as just stated by Wazzu) with long time or well known members who are banned without a red card. It just comes across as (as you said) a perception of arrogance and disrespect

EDIT: (even though I know you guys aren't arrogant or disrespectful)

I never understood the fascination for why someone was banned. They violated TOS, most likely multiple times, and therefore have been banned from the site. What else is there to know?
I can't shave with my eyes closed, meaning each day I have to look at myself in the mirror and respect who I see.

I understand that, but it's just natural to be curious. Whenever I hear about anything "tragic" that has happened but doesn't come with disclosure I run to google or wikipedia to read all I can about it. Obviously getting banned from OS wouldn't be considered tragic but you know what I mean. This was more of an attempt to help clear out the frowned upon conversations that pop up in the OT thread, so when it opens back up it can stay open

Plus I like to make sure I don't do whatever it was that got the person banned in the first place lol.

Exactly. Case in point, over the summer I was visiting my alma maters home page and saw that there was to be a memorial service for a faculty member who had passed away. It didn't give any details and, though I didn't know the professor, I still wondered what had happened. People are just naturally curious. Additionally, people are always going to be wondering if certain banned long time users (i.e. MassNole, GSW, Piderman, and I know I'm forgetting someone) are permabanned or if they will ever be unbanned. Also, when I say I'm forgetting someone, it's not DC. I think we all now he's almost certainly gone forever.

As Bum said, its just natural to be curious. I'm sure you don't feel that same curiosity, but a lot of us do. Whenever I see a pink name, my first thought is "why?" And go look through recent posts and whatnot

I can clear this up for you. All bans are permanent (the TOS states that in bold letters in the second paragraph).

                              Some appeal and are reinstated.

There are always going to be discussions and curiosity when long time users are banned and regardless of what you are saying, a majority of the time you guys are able to figure out what caused it.

If you see a pink name with no red cards, 9 out of 10 times he was discovered to be a previously banned user, or as mentioned, was banned through PM.

We don't need a dedicated place to discuss the few users that would end up warranting a discussion (IMO).

Edit: And I think Countryboy said it best. Someone who is banned violated the TOS somehow, mods don't just ban people to ban them.
