Random player development changes in franchise

Speaking from the standpoint of a new SMB player.

I've been having a blast in franchise.

Something I've noticed is that throughout the course of a season, players on my team's stats will invariably increase or decrease with occasionally a little cute, funny one-liner, i.e "Mila Blake won the rec league dodgeball championship" and their fielding will be like +3.

Or it will say something like, "David Gregory lifted too many grocery bags at once" and they'll get -10 arm power or whatever.

Is there some algorithm in place that influences this non-prompted player development? Mila Blake, a relief pitcher for my team, has not played in a few games, and received that buff for no reason other than at random.

So, is it random or what?

It’s both random, and when you invest in player development.
