I think it was something like illness (mumps?), and when it was announced their creative team threw emergency ideas on the table and Kurt and AJ made the most sense and had enough ability to draw interest still.

Correct me if I'm wrong, anyone. This was just what I heard from a source who heard from a source.

Basically they said Kurt wanted to make sure the fight continued so he put himself in the match to be sure it's still entertaining for the fans.

And then all they said for AJ was that it's a dream match everyone wants to see so they made it happen

Yeah, storyline implications don’t make much sense.

But their hands got forced by illness. Frankly, they wanted to give a fans a spectacle. Kurt Angle making his return? Finn and AJ in their first ever one on one match on any continent?

WWE made the best of a rough situation.
