Ratings.... low ticket sales. They have to announce it ahead of time for ratings. So adding Edge & Lesnar is an effort to boost both. We would like to be surprised every time there is a return but WWE is desperate for ratings and get fans back in the arenas.

I've never quite understand this if that's really how they think

I have always thought that having a surprise return is better "advertisement" and better for ratings for next week's show than just saying a superstar is returning next week

Scenario 1... Superstar makes surprise return and cleans house...Now we know he's back and will be on the show next week

Scenario 2...Cole just announces Superstar will be back next week...Now we know he's back and will be on the show next week

Both result in the same thing the following week. One is just way more exciting and buzzworthy

The surprise only works if you’re writing compelling tv every week other wise you should just announce it and get the one week ratings pop
