The hiring of Mike D'Antoni for the Los Angeles Lakers has more to do with the future than the present.
There was an ESPN report during training camp about the Lakers eyeing Lebron James in the summer of 2014. The Lakers would have only two players on their cap(if howard re-signs) and plenty of cap space. Lebron will have a player option that summer in which he could exit his contract.
With the organization making surprise moves over the last two summers the new coach and his system would be tailor-made for Lebron. The up-tempo offense and high diet of pick and rolls. If James is partnered with the most athletic and dominant big in Dwight Howard.
With the cap space the Lakers would still be able to add role players. The brand that Lebron has built would grow exponetially if he signed with the Lakers. Winning a championship with one of the greatest and most successful organizations in all of sports would cement his place among the best ever.
The Lakers are making a gamble if they are putting all their resources into the 2014 summer. If they don't acquire Lebron, plan B would be a significant drop off from plan A.
The best free agent playmakers outside of James could be Kyle Lowry, Eric Bledsoe, and Monta Ellis. Outside of a major trade you could see why Lebron is at the top of their list

I don't see anyway that Lebron leaves Miami. Leave wade and bosh to go play with Howard? I can't see that.

wade's health will continue to decline, bosh and james don't seem to have that bond that would necessarily play a major factor in his decision. lakers will be in a better position cap wise to add him and the pieces around them. If all 3 opt out of their contracts they would yet again have to take less money to stay together. It is an option for James and I can't see him not at least looking into the Lakers or a Cavs situation.
