Gran Turismo 5 News Post

After watching the clip, make sure you head over to RobGroove to read his Gran Turismo 5 impressions.

"Throughout the rest of my time at the BetaRooms I tried a few different cars on different tracks just to check out some stuff and one of the things i wanted to do was smash up a NASCAR. I remember Kazunori Yamauchi saying the NSACAR will break into a 1000 pieces, so i decided to test it out on this E3 beta demo version of GT5.

First of all the car seemed to feel pretty heavy in its handling. It seemed to really just want to go in a straight line with a lot of power but still manages to turn. I think (sounds obvious I know) it will be great for long tracks with long straights but if you need to whip this whip round lots of little tight corners, you’re gonna have a hard time. As for the damage, well it’s not that easy to demolish a car in the short amount of time the demo gives you but i tried my best. The point’s of impact seemed to crumple, exposing both front tires but I didn’t notice any pieces flying off the car really which brings me to thinking the finished product will have a whole new level of detail. But don’t mark my words as this is only me giving my impressions and thoughts. The only way to really know what’s going to happen is to play the game when it comes out."

Damage looks so ****ty. The car was going 100mph+ into a wall and the hood doesn't even break or come off. In that video all it appeared to be was sparks and a little bending/crumbling of metal. Looks like something out of a PS2 racing game in terms of damage. I may have missed it but I didn't see any pieces fly off the car.

Pitiful. Polyphony has been working on this game so long and it looks like the damage is crap. I wanna see cars get smashed. It seems they don't want cars to get too messed up too quickly, in that it would make the car brand look bad.

The damage looks good in some ways and not so good in others, however I'm aware this was only a beta version.

The crumpling of metal looks really good, but the fact that the whole bonnet didn't fly off is quite surprising. I hope this was part of the build in question and not the full game.

do the damage really matter?? like who even wants to crash a beautiful realistic looking car anyway??
Just lean how drive & not crash SMH

The kind of hit that he took and the end of one of the straights should have made his car undriveable while also badly injuring/killing the driver. While it would have been nice to see this kind of destruction, Polyphony would have had to implement damaga physics to body, frame, suspension, wheels etc....basically every parts would have needed to get some kind of physics to make it look right. As long as damage affects the handling, I'm happy.

Yes, damage is very important imo. If I crash it should affect me, and I'd like a visual indicator of how bad it is and by that I don't mean just a little icon.

Crashes are going to happen sooner or later, and if a big one does happen, I definitely don't want everyone coming out of it looking like they just rubbed up against each other. I'll wait until the final poduct to see exactly how well they did. I know that it actually looked ok during one of their rally videos, but it would suck if they don't implement it right everywhere.

Codemasters is way ahead of all companies in this regard (Grid, Dirt 1&2). They've had the best graphics to date (until this comes out probably) in Dirt 2 and the game was beautiful whether you crashed it or not.

Having read the impression over at RobGroove I can't help but feel that a further delay to the release of GT5 is looking possible.

The damage was obviously toned down in the game compared to real life. Reason being GT5 is not primarily about crashing your car into a wall, If the damage affects performance and looks slightly more drastic it'd be perfect. Also maybe they have a slider of sorts to make it more dramatic. I don't think they're intended for damage to destroy a car and make you retire from a race.

My advice, keep your cool, there have been videos where the car is flipping upside down and all sorts so I have to believe this is just a fraction of things to come.

Hopefully there is more tuning parts compared to Gran Turismo 4, Carbon fiber hoods are welcomed if they actually add to performance. Good to see the course maker is actually confirmed but its not something you would find in other games like Modnation, B-spec looks better, and kart races may be fun.
