Check out the latest NBA 2K11 Developer Insight, discussing the art of passing.

Quote:
"Steve Nash, John Stockton, Chris Paul, Jason Kidd. When you read these names one of the first things that should enter your mind is their amazing passing ability. They’ve got the innate gift of hitting players right where the ball needs to be. They not only complete the pass but also put receivers in position to make the next move. With this being said, has a player’s passer rating ever really mattered in a basketball videogame to this extent? Sure, it might have been factored into whether or not a player will be able to throw a good alley-oop or dish off a fancy pass. But in the end, couldn’t you throw a 35 foot chest pass to a covered receiver with the same accuracy using Steve Nash as you could with, say, Joel Przybilla? The answer is a resounding yes, but in 2K11, pass ratings matter in almost every aspect of throwing the ball. Whether you’re trying to thread the needle on a pass to the interior or you’re attempting to pass out of a shot, the passing ability of the ball-handler now matters. It determines whether or not the pass will be clean or will force the receiver to adjust his stance to catch the ball. The receiver might have to lean or the pass might force him to adjust so much that he bobbles the ball (which in turn can be retrieved by anyone). Many factors come into play here other than the pass rating, such as the distance to the receiver and how open the receiver is where he’s supposed to catch the ball. It’s amazing the difference this has made to the passing game and we’re very happy that pass ratings finally matter."

Jeebs.. family say it aint so !!!! as an anti cheese measure for guys playing the passing lanes and cheating on defense surely you can agree you have no better weapon that then fake pass ? Hell you can barely watch any post entre pass in the nba against good defense and not see atl least one fake pass.

I disagree with everyone who does not think it should be in the game. Without it cheating defenders have an advantage because they can see your about to pass and jump lanes.

If you don't have all your options in real life including the jump pass you won't achieve balance.

the thing is they just need to make sure the defensive speeds are balanced and that the defense have appropriate tools.

The cpu on all star is almost too good defending the lanes. ( Great defensive teams like the lakers anyway) Trying to run the utah offense against kobe and artest guarding those wings is murder.

I didnt even know there was a 'pick' button. Rather have fake passing than a button I dont know about.

I know what you mean about balance. I've seen the cheesers who run around trying to steal every single pass. In that sense I can understand. I just don't want to see a fake pass 5+ times a possession. I also would like to see these animations play out as well.

That's your problem you didn't read the manual.

LoL...Just kidding man.

edit: The "pick" button (circle/B) worked like this. If you held it down. A big man (either PF or C) would come over and set a pick and do a pick and roll. If you tap the pick button. Your big man will come over and run a pick n' slip (very effective vs a person like me who like to hegde with the big). And finally if you held L2 and circle/B. Your big man would run a pick n' pop or pick n' fade.

To me the pick and roll is the number one play ran in the NBA (or maybe basketball period).

edit2: But again...I do understand the value of what the fake button will bring. I can't tell you how many times. I would be trying to throw a post entrant pass. And watch as my defender back up a little and steal the pass.

You still have all those options. It's just moved to another button.

You can do all that and people call offball defense cheese lol? I was cool with the two man plays and the quick plays.

Same here. 2K6 made a HUGE leap over 2K5 thanks to the Shot Stick (and the old Isomotion).

Some of the passing animations still aren't quite right for the passing angle that is available....and the the passer sometimes throws the ball right through the head or neck of a defender, rather than throwing a higher pass to get the ball over the defender.

Also defenders still seem too unaware of the ball. many times a pass will whiz right toward a defender and they won't even try to tip it.

at the 3:56 mark of the Magic vs Nuggets video there is a bad underhand pass that goes right through the head/neck of a defender to a streaking Vince Carter. the passer picked the wrong type of pass for that angle - he should've done a higher overhead pass to get the ball over the defender....second, the defender just stands there and doesn't even attempt to tip the ball even though the ball is going right toward him. Hopefully this type of incorrect pass selection can be tweaked.
On occasion there may be situations where a ball flies right by a defender without him tipping it, yes. But trust me, players play passing lanes VERY well in 2K11. You can't just throw the ball wherever you want...Rob made it very hard on me to tune passing because of all of his pass steals. It's well balanced now and you will soon find out that you have to be very smart and selective about your passing.

Thanks for answering questions.
I like Ricky Davis, but I despise the Hawkeyes. So Kenyon Murray, while a great defender, was still a puny Hawkeye.

as for the new nba2k11, about the new wrap around passes: I love that these are now in for penetrating guards. My only hope is that these are balanced and not overpowering. If I am a great passer like Rondo and penetrate to the rim and Perkins defender comes over to block my shot, and I see that and pass it over...can perk now quickly gather and dunk before the same defender turns around and contests perk's shot? currently this is impossible, but then again we do not have these specific passes as options.

Also, if I do this over and over, will the AI adjust and sometimes not come to challenge my penetration and stay with their man (perk)? or maybe their rotation covers perk most of the time if the defender leaves him? just wondering if you can flesh out the details of how this wrap pass is usefull (funny, i've wanted it forever as a PG, but also ony want it to be successfull when used correctly). thanks!
The interior wrap passes make a huge difference in being able to get shots off quickly under the basket. Rotations can negate them and they're based on the intelligence and quickness abilities of the defenders, but you can catch just about anyone off guard with one of these, on occasion, which I think is realistic. It's well balanced.

Does tight onball defense (on the passer) increase the difficulty of a pass, specifically post entry and long up court passes.
Players with high pass ratings have opportunities to throw bad passes in the same situations bad passers do, except that their likelihood is significantly decreased in every situation. Tight on-ball defense can force turnovers...especially if the on-ball defender has a size or wingspan advantage on the passer, which can lead to tipped passes.

If I can piggy back here. They really seemed to beef up the pass lane defense but also individual defenders who are great defenders....shhh. Playing the lakers for example with Kobe and artest you have to ve VERY selective with your passing on the wings. Especially initiating plays that you run often.

They can disrupt everything your trying to do on defense but forcing you to catch passes a step or two from where you would like. Wether they are denying the ball or bodying a guy up. I found I had to use icon lead pass to create a passing lane OR time my pass so that it occurs just as the man receiver was making his cut.

It made for very exciting possessions if you know what I mean. You couldn't take a single pass off let alone a whole possession.

If fake pass is the "B" (on 360) button, what is the "call for pick" button? I love the pick and roll.
