NBA Jam's critical success has led EA Sports to resurrect the beloved NFL Blitz series as well, Jeff Gerstmann reports over on Giant Bomb. Development is rumored to be underway, and the multiplatform game wouldn't release until 2012.

Gerstmann attributes the news to an industry insider and also his previous report that EA Sports, in acquiring the NBA Jam franchise from the remnants of Midway, also picked up "multiple Midway sports franchises," which includes NFL Blitz.

"It sounds like the game is going to be developed at EA's Tiburon studio," Gerstmann writes, "which makes sense both because it's where EA makes its football games and it's also where one of the creators of the Blitz series, Mark Turmell, is currently serving as the Senior Creative Director."

No brainer for EA Sports.

blitz was an awesome game, I imagine the new version would not have as much violence though

Yeah, I can't see it being nearly as violent. Especially if it is going to be NFL Blitz again.

It appears GiantBomb might have the scoop:

"I got a phone call a few weeks ago from an industry insider! A tipster, if you will! The content of the call was brief and without much to go on, but the crux of the call was crystal clear. Electronic Arts is beginning work on a new NFL Blitz game. It sounds like the game is going to be developed at EA's Tiburon studio, which makes sense both because it's where EA makes its football games and it's also where one of the creators of the Blitz series, Mark Turmell, is currently serving as the Senior Creative Director.

Other details are scarce, which is unsurprising since the game is said to be very, very early in the development process, but I also heard that the game would be released on multiple consoles and that it probably wouldn't hit until 2012. I checked in with EA for an official confirmation of the project, but as I'm sure you're well aware, EA 'doesn't comment on rumors or speculation.'"

This is definitely loose information and I wouldn't be surprised if it is wrong -- but most likely it has a great chance to be right since EA has already done the same with NBA Jam. Who's excited about this if it's true?

Doing NBA Jam was an awesome idea. But I don't think of NFL Blitz as a "must have" classic game. I never really enjoyed it. How about you work at making Madden not suck?

Yeah, It's called Madden 12.

They should Do this with Tecmo Bowl. 7 vs 7 with the original football game that people still play to this day.

Please let this be true. I loved the early Blitz games and played them to death on my N64.

this is great news. not for NFL Blitz mind you. but that a NHL Open Ice re-make can't be far behind it

EA needs to focus on all of the problems with madden before trying to develop another blitz game

# 16 statum71 @ 11/22/10 10:31 AM
This could be good. Maybe now they'll use this game to focus on the casual fans. And get Madden turned back in the direction of hardcore.

Would love to see a new Blitz ala the new NBA Jam.

Blitz 2001 on the Dreamcast still gets a ton of play from me.

Meh, just another milking of the NFL license while EA still has it.

Best case scenario for EA: 3 NFL games - Head Coach, Madden & Street/Blitz, priced at $40 all with interchangeable save files. HC is the roster manager game, Madden is turned into a sim game of football it should be, while Blitz is the mass-appeal, pick-up and play option.

Rather them bring back the NFL Street series than Blitz

# 20 RoyalBoyle78 @ 11/23/10 10:10 AM
I'm not sure, this looks better then what I can get from Blitz, I'm a little curios now, this looks better then Madden too.. Look at the Player Models. What if it isn't Something from EA.
