NBA 2K14 News Post

Of all the PlayStation 4 sports games, NBA 2K14 is the one I have played the most. I have almost exclusively played the new-look My Career mode, where you create an avatar and guide him through the cliché ascent from unknown street baller to NBA champion.

While the premise itself is stale, the mode's presentation is fresh, plus its scope is larger than any previous sports gaming story mode. You'd have to go all the way back to Midway's retired NBA Ballers and Blitz: The League series to find a sports game that put anywhere near as much work into crafting storylines and choreographing cutscenes.

Add, " Cant even play mode" as a miss.

The greatest miss of all is how they fail to capture a true simulation of what it means to go from a top college prospect to being a pro. Until they focus on that aspect this mode is unplayable to me.

Forcing cut scene, made up rivals, and story boards was the last thing this mode needed. The put the cart in front of the horse and now the mode has become unplayable.

If they are going to steal ideas for RPG's. They should have stole from Skyrim. At least in that game actually doing certain aspects make me better at the very same action that I'm doing. As oppose to accumulating VC/Skill point (or what ever they want to call it today) just to use not only on completely non related skills in My Career mode, but random stuff in every other mode.

I'm the 6th man on my team and was building team chemistry until one of the "veteran" players came to me demanding I wear a red clown nose for all media appearances. I told him to shove it and my Team Chemistry rating went down 10 points to 48.

I accepted handling the guy's luggage, cause that's an acceptable rookie hazing, but making a fool out of myself is not something I'm willing to do, so I find it completely absurd that my refusal to do something like that should kill my chemistry with my teammates, especially given how well we have performed together, and how poorly the a-hole who is forcing me to do all these things at my expense is playing.

That's a huge miss in my opinion. I've fallen down to where I was before I started playing because I refused to make my player into a fool. Never mind all the positive moves that I have made to establish better team chemistry, if you don't do one thing properly its gonna kill your rating. Its like this with the teammate ratings in the game too, good ball movement usually doesn't provide much of an increase but accidentally let your player score (even when it comes when your assignment gets randomly changed), and you lose a ton of points. Basically you lose far too much for small mistakes than you gain for great play/decisions.

Good read especially the VC part. Didn't know about the crappy rewarding system
Remember that in 2k11 or 2k12 you got a HUGE amount of SP for getting a A+ teamgrade, much more than compared to those awarded for individual performance
It's sad how thing are turning out

Huge MISS! I haven't been able to play either of these modes. Every time I try it kicks me back to the main menu.

Mannnnnn!!! That was a good write up right there!!! I pretty much agree on all he just said on this article and I'm going to add some things.....

So we're supposed to be professional basketball players right?! In a virtual world!! Why in the world can I not wear the shoes I wanna wear?! I don't need an endorsement to afford shoes!!!! I'm a PROFESSIONAL!!! And I'm pretty sure, seeing that I played college baseball, that Organizations provide you with all the accessories you need on field/on court !!!! Why in the world do I have to build up VC to rock a headband, tape on my fingers, or an ankle brace?!?! C'mon 2k, that's absolutely pitiful!!! Yes I understanding building something up to be able to acquire new skills and upgrade attributes....just take VC out and use points or something

And since you wanna make me get endorsements to be able to buy things and you wanna make me a ball hog, why am I not receiving endorsements after 30 straight 30+ point games and avg of 6 assists and 7 rebounds ...like my goodness, what do you have to do to get noticed?! Pick up the the extravagant agent over family?! Is that the only way?!?!

The same cut scenes over and over really blows my high on 2k14 too...yea it was cool at first but I don't wanna here the same annoying voices 800 times...and speaking of voices....why doesn't My Guy get interviewed at half time or end of game situations?!?! How in the world does VC do all these lame cut scenes and not do something that matters...and on top of that, I never see my player of the game highlights!! It's ridiculous....

I refused to carry Earl Watson's luggage, because that seemed like a b*tch move. I actually got more fans and respect for it. Then I agreed to wear the clown nose, because it's silly/goofy and really innocuous rookie hazing. I don't think you're looking like a "fool" - the point is that you don't always take yourself too seriously. I chose to see it as harmless and social media and the team responded positively.. so, just a different perspective.

Completely agree that the mode is far from perfect.. earning VC and team chemistry doesn't always make much sense. But for the first next-gen 2K, I think they got a lot of things right and I'm very, very excited to see where MyCareer goes in the future.

P.S. I LOVE the budding bromance I've got going on with LMA. Pretty cool to have a vet take you under his wing. I like how they worked in stuff like free throw practice and scrimmages. Awesome.

There are so many problems with this game that I already traded it back in to GameStop. MyCareer is corny and ridiculous, I hate that everybody gets pretty much the same story, there's no unique experience. What if I don't want to be some street baller that got a tryout? Maybe I want to be a star freshmen out of college or someone who stayed all 4 years, someone who went overseas to play, whatever. And honestly, they could fit in A LOT more dialogue options if there were no voices; but if you're going to have voices, everyone needs one, and your player should have more than the 1 ridiculous voice option.

Not bad idea's i would like it if we played a season in college before the draft at least or go to China or somewhere and play there before coming in but that would be a lot of work for them and im not feeling them really being invested into the mode enough to care or make the mode much better

Add gameplay to the mix. I'm a 7'2" center and I had to add dunk packages to dunk the ball. Really?? Rebounding is a joke. When I have inside position, the CPU makes 93% of the shots. When they miss, and I have inside position, I get out rebounded by someone much shorter. I'm averaging about 2 boards a game. My last game, I took a pass from the right block. I turned baseline and shot a hook that hit the side of the backboard. WTF?? I'm slowly not liking this game.

# 13 quehouston @ 12/09/13 02:25 PM
I just wish the mode was more realistic. They give us a 2x VC multiplier for HOF but HOF is close to impossible to win on while playing realistically. My teammates literally cannot function without me, and I put up ridiculous numbers without trying to. I find myself putting up 25+ shots a game because my teammates literally will not shoot the ball. They pass me the ball without me even calling for it. I call a play, but it breaks down immediately. It's really a mess on court if you are trying to play sim and not dominate every game as a rookie unrealistically.

The storyline stuff is okay, but make it dynamic. I don't want the same story as the next guy. Stop making me miss layups to force me to have a training session. Stop taking me out in the 2nd quarter when we are up by 25, just so you can put me back in with 2 seconds left telling me to hit the game winner. Stop telling me to score 10 points straight, so you can penalize me for not ball hogging.

This mode would be so great if it wasn't such a fantasy/fairytale.

I don't like the whole story feel. Relationships with players is cool and all but it'd be nice if the mode just focused on being a prospect and going through your nba career. Take out all the drama stuff that's forced there and let players make their own stories by how they play/progress through the mode.In other words, have the mode actually analyze your situation, such as if you're coming from a huge injury or you disrespected your teammates and just let that be a story in NBA Headlines and questioned for it during interviews. Let's keep all the Hollywood stuff out, or at least have an option to turn it off.

Perfectly said. We should be able to be players out of college. I, personally, don't want to pllay the story of a street baller who went to the NBA. 2k needs to give us the option! I honestly don't understand how they create the mode, and don't see the problems with certain aspects. It's like developers see the problems, say screw it, we'll fix SOME of it for next year's game and say it's an improved experience, when we could've just put it all in the yea before but we didn't because we want to give people a reason to buy next year's game rather than have to work hard at coming up with other creative stuff. SMH. Like really, we still don't have voice options? It's all about giving players OPTIONS, NOT FORCING THEM TO PLAY A CERTAIN WAY, ESPECIALLY FOR AN RPG TYPE MODE. MAKES NO SENSE.

My 5'10" point guard has logged more minutes as a shooting guard than he has at his natural position, as my coach frequently matches me up against taller, stronger players like Kobe Bryant (6'6") and Dwyane Wade (6'4").

This could just be because the team is overloaded with pgs and there are only 2 sgs.

# 17 kadzier @ 12/09/13 03:30 PM
The game sometimes forces you to miss shots or your team to fall behind for a cutscene or dynamic goal, and that's total BS. At least make those cutscenes pop up if I actually have a bad shooting night, not because the story decides it's time. Taking away that much control from the user has to be a cardinal sin

So, my issue is that I miss WIDE open jumpers, my teammates don't TAKE wide open jumpers, and the play system almost never works. I either end up on the other side of the play (it's always the same play btw) with no involvement, no big deal; or I end up catching the ball and it sets up an iso or the play breaks down and we scramble.

Also, the fact that I can't practice my jumper sucks a lot. I assign one (through a VERY messed up menu system) and then have to play an entire game with it regardless of whether or not it works.

Furthermore, when Ronnie was on the blog last week he said we could alter rosters and sliders via "Features>MyPlayer" but when you go to that menu all you can alter is the appearance of your MyPlayer... has anyone else found out how to use custom rosters in MyCareer?

I really want to like this mode, but it's pretty frustrating some times. Thankfully I'm on the 76ers who are terrible and I get to play and become a featured player early in my career (albeit off the bench).

Lastly, the animation bumps that happen when you try to run out on the break and run into someone is so frustrating. I can't do anything without bumping someone and have only gotten a couple of very lucky dunks in my career. These small collisions send my player to a halt or even backwards which is worse on the defensive end as well. I give up a ton of wide open shots because I play up on my guy only to make a forced animation move to get out of his way... frustrating.

Lots of good, lots of real bad. Basically 2k starting to go downhill on it's own success since NBA Live continues to suck. Basically, it's gonna take an EA type of rock bottom for the company to realize "Hey, we should listen to our consumers." I probably won't buy 2k myself next year until either A) I see gameplay videos or B) get it for Christmas.

How anyone could enjoy such a scripted experience is beyond me.
