NHL 15 News Post

EA Sports has released a new NHL 15 video featuring the Superstar Skill Stick. They have also released a new blog and some new screenshots.

Quote:
Now, all the tools of an NHL superstar are in your hands. The revolutionary Skill Stick has evolved to give even more control to the player, featuring an intuitive right stick control scheme that is easy to use but also packed with depth.

The all-new Superstar Skill Stick allows for complete fluidity when stickhandling, giving incredible control with the right analog stick.

Use the Superstar Skill Stick with the right analog stick and True Performance Skating with the left to combine dekes and skating movement together. The left and right stick now act independently, allowing for more moves to embarrass the opposition.

Chain moves together to keep defenders guessing. Use a stride deke to move a defender one way then turn him inside-out by chaining it together with a windmill deke. In NHL 15, there are countless ways to get past defenders and creating scoring opportunities using the Superstar Skill Stick.

hmmm. Hard to tell if the puck is glued to the stick like previous years.

I understand there's always going to be a certain degree of "stuck" with puck on stick...but, hot balls. Those new dekes look light years better than the previous version. Dear EA, please make the defense equally as great.
Really like the way they actually kind of have wrist movement to make subtle puck motions, instead of the previous "stuck on the blade" way it looked.

I agree the wrist movement was really good looking. But I echo your please make the defense equally as great.

Offense has 7000 stick moves and angle skating moves to get around a defenseman that has a weak canned poke check and a check button. Doesn't seem to be a fair weapons match up if you ask me.

I will say, this is the game that is inching me towards going next gen. We'll see

Here's my "Dream Control Scheme" that i've posted probably way too much at this point.
"I mentioned in another thread that it would be nice if they revamped the skill-stick system to be used on defense for just about everything. Have the left trigger, or L2/LB be something you hold to activate your "stick moves" and then you could use a MLB 2K type system where different movements of the thumb stick would perform different actions. Maybe while holding LB you would move the right stick up, and depending on the speed and distance you move the stick, your on-screen player would attempt to stick lift with an equal amount of force. That combined with the player's defensive attributes could help determine the chance (along with the accuracy of your aim) of missing and getting a possible high sticking call, or just missing all together.
Then you could have things like pushing the stick down to try and disrupt reception of passes or deflections (Holding it down allowing you to try and tie the player's stick up and keep it down, but also leaving your player vulnerable to missing passes to intercept, or rebounds to clear). You could even have it so when you're next to/behind a player you would kind of roll the slick left/right and up to try and reach around the player to knock the puck loose, but then your attributes and force of the movements would affect the likelihood of you getting called for a hold.
Then if you just moved the right stick you would poke check in that direction, again, with speed and distance affecting how far and forcefully you go for the poke, and to keep the broken record going, your movements combined with your player's attributes and the accuracy of your poke determining how likely you are to take the skates out on a guy.
That level of control would make defense so much more fun. The learning curve would be steep initially, but i'm sure it was when they went from A to Slap shot, and B to Wrist shot. But with that defense would become fun, and you would practically free yourself of the buttons on the face, maybe allowing them to have something like FIFA where you can send a guy ahead to receive a pass, or call for help along the boards. Anything to let you have more control over yourself, and your team mates."

Interesting that this is being hyped. It's not really different than what was in NHL 14, just looks better and more refined.

# 6 TootSweet @ 07/23/14 12:54 PM
That looked pretty sweet. If they can put in some elaborate defending controlled we will be in for a treat.

To me, just looks like the same types of deke moves and animations as they've advertised in past years of the game. Hopefully it is different this time around.

Unfortunately, we'll never know until actual gameplay video is out which prob won't be for at least another month.

I don't get why these types of trailers for all video games still exist and why people buy into it so much. The videos shown on trailers(not just for sports games, but other games as well) are usually always stuff we'll never actually see in the game itself, yet it always seems to be enough to get people hyped for the game.

The game is almost a month away from being released, and other than about a minute of off screen footage of two idiots playing at E3, we have seen absolutely zero real gameplay. This should be a gigantic red flag to everyone.

Also, the shots of the crowd, in the crowd, of goal celebrations....

WOW.
uh that was a huge problem in nhl 14, short side goals were the way to go and they went in with high percent of success.

Didn't basically same thing happen last year too(not just for NHL,but also other games like Madden,NBA,MLB and stuff?)

I'm impressed. It sounds like you'll finally be able to deke while continuing to skate. That has been sorely missing for a while, and I think will only help open the game up and add a level of realism.

Looking forward to more information.

This game is shaping up to be sports game of the year.

This all but confirmed my biggest concern. Every defender shown being deked around in the video were all basically just skating backwards, staring at the puck. No type of stick checking, no use of the arms/body, nothing. It's apparent that defense has largely ignored. Hopefully I'm proven wrong.

It's great to include offensive skill stick moves, but when the defense has been left impotent it's not going to result in a good balance of gameplay.

I'm usually a half-empty type guy when it comes to EA's hockey series, but in this case, what you saw was a result of the team wanting to showcase the skill stick - so that's probably why the dmen looked like Brendan Smith.

Hopefully dmen are given more tools as well, but for this video, I think the point was to showcase mainly the offensive tools at ones disposal.

Haha. Brendan Smith. How'd you know I was a Wings fan?

You might be correct about this video. However, I've yet to see anything encouraging about defensive tools from any of the videos/trailers so far. I hope I'm wrong.

So still no defensive skill stick? The game's current stick checking system could really benefit from a fuller range of control using the right joystick.

As it currently is in NHL 14, you're basically at the mercy of animation roulette whenever you poke check or stick lift, as your stick could end up going in any direction, which often leads to unnecessary tripping and slashing penalties.

Putting body checking on the right joystick is a waste, since you don't need any kind of user direction input to throw a hit.

Based off of what? The combined 2 mins of real gameplay footage that has been seen or the fluff and repetitive interviews that are out there?

I'll wait for the demo to see if it's anything more than a port with some graphical upgrades and shoddy AI and glitch fest to score again. If you can get any discernible info that clears up the questions surrounding this series from these hype trailers then you are a better detective than I could ever be.

It did, even for The Show. It seems to be the new way of marketing for the next gen sports games.

And why wouldn't it be? There are hardly any games out for these systems and no competition for any sports other than the NBA franchises. So they can release nothing until around release and still sell their products cause if you like the sport you are stuck with limited options.

Bad for us, the consumers, great for EA, 2k, and SCEA.

Not to mention that in years past of this game the defender could not play the puck on a loose puck deke animation because the puck was not truly loose. No telling if this has been improved yet.

Nothing like watching some kid spamming the one touch dekes while you are positioned perfectly on d and watch as he gets positioning on your player because the puck is tied to his animation that you cannot seem to disrupt in any realistic manner.
