Could NBA 2K16 be Implementing College Hoops?

Spike Lee is going to take NBA 2K16 to another level with his inclusion in the game’s MyCareer story mode. Story is everything, after all.

My Career is going to follow the world of your player (Ronnie 2K has confirmed “Frequent Vibrations” is not your only option) as he continues his hoops journey in high school. That sounds great, but what’s the real underlying question here? NBA rules state that a player cannot jump straight to the pros.

All three of the covers released for 2K16 feature the star from their college days: Steph Curry at Davidson, Anthony Davis at Kentucky and James Harden at Arizona State. Could college hoops, after eight years and one console generation, be returning to the PlayStation and Xbox?

There’s also the potential of walking in Emmanuel Mudiay’s footsteps, and playing overseas after high school.

Either way, with the option to play overseas or choosing the length of your college career, simulation would be taken to the next step for sure. And Spike Lee is definitely the kind of guy that could make this happen.

I struggle to even fathom how college hoops could somehow be involved but there's absolutely no denying of the authentic college representations on each of the three covers.

Initially, with 2K's Euroleague rights, I kind of figured it'd be a Brandon Jennings linear storyline type of thing that takes a player overseas for a year before entering the draft.

But with the "choose your story" and the college cover representation, I admit I'm intrigued.

Don't read too much into cover art.

Sure, the covers do show the stars in their college uniforms; it feels more like a "great moment" in the star's life type of thing to me.

I don't know what the story Spike Lee will have us star in. I will say from the little he stated it reminded me of an AI type of story.

High school Phenom gets in trouble due to some life altering event
player experiences highs and lows involving family, money, fame and fortune.

I also actually think that Spike Lee will provide a decent story. I just don't know if that story will be guided like a roller-coaster or as open as a sand-box. I suspect the former rather than the latter but will be happy if it is a sand-box type of story.

I couldn't care less about the story tbh, just make sure the servers are stable and turn down all the online bs and I'll be first in line to buy. But the offline story? There's a 99% chance I won't even have my volume on

I don't know if there'd even be enough disk space for it. But then again it's blu-ray so it's a possibility nonetheless.

& yeah I wish they could at least do a dlc for it or something similar to the Draft Combine for 2k10.

I'm kinda upset I have my hopes up now.

I doubt we see a full scale college hoops ordeal but perhaps 2k has gotten licensing of some major colleges to select from, nothing keeps a company from getting individual licensing from a college, they are not allowed to have the NCAA brand, but if I'm not mistaken any school can agree to be used if they so choose.

I definitely think we all have to be careful not to get our hopes up or anything because this very well could not work out how we want it to. That said, saying not to read to much into cover art isn't really appropriate either. The reason College Hoops 2K doesn't exist anymore in the first place was allegedly because of the asking price for the NCAA licensing. It would appear unlikely that 2K would pay the licensing fee just to put three jerseys on the cover of their game just to show 'a great moment in that star's life.'

I'll keep my excitement tempered because I know the NCAA legal situation. But man oh man would this be cool. Even if it was only a few teams and limited to the MY CAREER MODE.

If they were to implement some type of fictonal "high school" you attend, then afterwards make you play overseas somehow to prove yourself then yes that would be a pretty cool idea! They already have the Euro teams in the game so they could do this no?

While having an NCAA aspect in 2K would be an excellent addition, this post is dead on. Licensing alone would be a killer. Conferences, conference tourney's, NCAA tourney, final four, etc.

I could only see a college career stint if it was super bland and watered down. But even then I don't see it happening. They would have to name it The Big Tournament Thingy or something lame.

Specific licenses from 3 individual colleges/universities to show jerseys is not related to the entire NCAA. MarvellousOne is correct when he says:

I'm aware of that, I know how the CLC works. I'm saying it's unlikely that 2K would spend the money on the licensing just for a picture of three guys on the cover of the game. That's a waste of money.

Gotta give it up to the dude who wrote this. Dude took not much and really made a good article about it.

I think he's right, may be they are paying the former college players, that played on certain teams with certain players in the league, in their final year in college. Or as part of the story you have flashbacks to certain games in college.

And as far as my player goes you'll may be play senior year in hs and with so many 1 and dones you'll only have the option to play your freshman year, go over seas, or d league for the 2014-15 season then be drafted in 2015.
