NBA 2K16 News Post

NBA 2K Gameplay Director, Mike Wang has been answering questions in various threads in the NBA 2K Forum, so I thought I'd gather them all here, for convenience.

As always, once patches are submitted to MS and Sony, it typically takes 10 to 14 days to become available (usually longer for MS).

Patch 3 Changes

Q: When will the third patch be released?
A: It should be finished this week... Then off to MS and Sony

Q: CPU being overpowered in Pro-Am.
A: This will be addressed in patch 3.

Q: Are blocks being addressed?
A: We're just nerfing poorly rated shot blockers so guys like JJ Redick aren't throwing shots like Lebron.
A: Blocks are being addressed in Patch 3.

Q: Is there a chance we could see stationary stepbacks and step shots get a healthy boost (especially when open) for the players that can do them (or have high ratings and relevant badges)?
A: This one's tricky, Sundown. Currently, standing stepback jumpers are treated the same as other "skill" shots like spin jumpers and pull-up J's. So to fix zig-zagging pull-ups, all of these shots took a pretty big hit. I need to put standing stepbacks in a separate category to be able to boost JUST those shot types, so it's something that we'd have to address in the patch. I'll investigate that today.

Q: Does shooting and Patch 3 tweaks apply in already in progress MyCareers?
A: Yes. They apply everywhere.

Q: Regarding stepback jumpers.
A: I think we have a solution for Patch 3. Until then, it's kind of hacky, but there is a workaround. If you hold LS away, tap Shoot to do the stepback jumper, but then pause for a brief moment (technically, breaking out of the shot to a live dribble, then shooting immediately after) rather than doing it as a Tap+Press&Hold mechanic, you can still create space with the stepback and then branch into the shot portion without incurring the penalty.

Q: Getting an off balance "contested" shot when you don't complete your dribble.
A: It will be patched.
A: Yes, this is what I was referring to when I said it will be patched. Guys playing fadeaway contested anims at inappropriate times. The defensive threshold to trigger those shot animations is just way too low. Nothing is changing with shot percentages... it's just an aesthetic change.

Q: Gameplay updates.
A: We've made a number of significant gameplay fixes for this 3rd patch and my time has been swamped trying to test and balance gameplay before it goes out the door, while also starting new designs and feature work on 2k17. So as much as I'd love to mess with you guys by tweaking the game every day, that's simply not a good use of time.

Shooting Changes

Q: Contested shots at the rim.
A: The change I made only impacts contact shots. Across the board, you should see those drop less. But you can tell by the animation, if the collision looks heavy (defender noticeably knocking the shooter off balance for example), the shot % gets dropped much lower than if the collision looks light (shooter is getting hit by the defender but his layup looks relatively undisturbed.)

Q: What constitutes an "excellent shooter" for these wide open 3 %s you've adjusted?
A: I don't want to give away how our shot heuristics work, but basically, anybody above a 75 rating would see a slight increase in wide open 3's since Saturday. The higher the rating, the bigger the increase. But again, the boost was pretty conservative.

Q: Contested threes.
A: Yeah, I didn't touch contested 3s at all. I can make a tweak there as well if you guys all feel it's a problem. Seems like most people are seeing plenty of bricks on well contested 3s though, so it's a little scary to hit them even harder. It's also possible that what you're perceiving as a well contested 3, is actually considered open as far as the game is concerned. That would change how I go about fixing your issue.

Q: What did the two shooting updates do?
A: The two updates mentioned by bcruise are the only shot % updates made to date. The first was to lower middies, the second to lower contact layups. I have noticed a significant increase in 3pt success since day 1 (primarily in the park), but I attribute that mostly to you guys getting better at the game and your players' leveling up over time.

Roster Updates

Q: Is there any type of live DNA updating that affects players day-to-day based on NBA day-to-day activities?
A: Mike Stauffer is our roster guy and is making regular updates, yes.

Other Updates

Q: Deadeye badge in NBA 2K16 compared to last year.
A: Deadeye was way too OP last year, essentially it made the game think that closing defenders were not there at all. It's still one of the strongest shooting badges, but we did have to neutralize it a bit.

Like it's getting ridiculous

We have finished a season in MyLeague Online i have the stats but i'm at work So i can't publish yet block stats are nowhere near as exagerated by some people. They are pretty normal gameplay or statistics wise. Complainers kept complaining about and i also do think they devs already did smt about blocks in the backend so i hope they don't nerf any more. I tried my best to calm the unnecesarry whining threads yet they somehow affect the gameplay and i don't like just as you don't 23. Well All we can do is hope now for the better..

How long does it take for Xbox one gamers to get the patch once it's approved?

Shooting, Contested Shots, etc ... do they really need to be patched? Can't we alter them with sliders?

Thinks i didnt see mentioned and i believe that need to me addressed

Lead pass should be nerfed. I gan throw all the lead passes i want in pnr

More defensive awareness in general, specially for the bigs

Less contact in floppy plays in the offscreens, and more contact jn pnr and flare screens

Less agressivity in defensive helps - every cpu help in my team is a shooting fault

Less dunks in the paint by non dominant big players. Every one is like shaq

HOW ABOUT PC users get this patch before consoles? What is holding it back? Thanks

Request for My Career

Considering the Athletic caps which I agree with and understand for Speed: I respectfully feel the cap on Acceleration is too strict on all positions outside of PG.

Please boost the Acceleration effect for Users for anyone below 80 acceleration so that they may be able to do perform certain tasks that require a basic ability of quickness.

The deficiencies in quickness are exposed and exploited in ball control mechanics as well as dunk and layup attempts that require a certain swiftness to be performed appropriately.

You know what I would like to see come back ?...

Last year in my 2k team up leagues and Jordan rec center ppl always complained on fast breaks that if you took off to fast the game would stop you to catch the ball . You could still fast break but helped the defense catch up a little . I hated that then but

I would like to see that back ! The cherry picking in this game is crazy . Guys are averaging almost 50 fast break points a game in our teamup leagues . It doesn't help that those basket to basket passes have a high success rate.

Blocks are OP. Shooting is wack. Ball tracking is unrealistic. Defense recovery is unrealistic. It's so much I can go on and on.

I just got done with a close game online. I'm up 1 with 40 seconds to go. I make a great defensive play and I got Curry on the break with Westbrook trailing at least 20 ft back. Well guess what? Curry, rated 94 ovr misses a WIDE OPEN LAYUP. I guess the game thought Westbrook's pursuit was a "contest". Westbrook was not even close or else he would've blocked Currys shot with the way the blocking is OP. Thankfully a teammate got the rebound for the putback but I was upset because that's not realistic NBA basketball. 94 ovr rated players shouldn't be missing layups on a break.
Hm. And realistic NBA basketball doesn't feature a "94 ovr rated player".

Even Lebron isn't perfect

Curry missed the wide open dunk and even Lee couldn't lay it in

Last example for humanity

Btw: I also dont think that shooting and contested shots needs a tweak within the next patch. It's all bout realism!

Has there been any word on the patch fixing post double teams?

And the often long lack of crowd atmosphere / noise?

These two issues fixed will make this the GOAT.

Both as they stand now though are really ruining the experience.

I think 2k16 is the best basketball-simulation-game that has been dropped yet.
Sure, it need some tweaks. For example the transition-defense, the awareness of every player on the court (on both ends). That's the gameplay part. With a modified roster (w/tendencies) and good sliders in my opinion the game REPRESENT realism, yeah. But for real realism you have to go to the court, you know this.

For me, i'm an offline player (only MyLeague and play now) the most annoying things are the lack of realism when it comes to contract issues in ML or crazy trades like Drummond for Omer Casspi, filler + future picks and the Kings save their 4th center. The draft-decisions in MyLeague are also often weird and makes me head-shaking. Especially after a BlogEntry from a 2k dev, which has praised the new AI-Logic in MyLeague, i'm very disappointed with the status quo.

What about incentives to inside scoring players? The game leans very heavily to outside scoring. Inside/balanced guards need a boost to post fadeaway or something lol. Also the ball security in the paint needs to be raised a bit it should probably be tied into post control or something lol. Also some weird stuff happens when rebounding sometimes on my big I can have a guy boxed out then when the shot goes up the person I was boxing magically warps through me and gets prime position for rebound lol I figured out a way to counter that and still get my boards but a box out is a boxout and that shouldn't happen lol.

I just hate how no one over a 78ish ovr ever makes it to free agency the only time I every singed a superstar was a 85ovr Melo's but that was only because he was 40

Is the Jordan rec center returning?

# 79 24ct @ 11/06/15 01:53 PM
Oh I forgot. Is proam getting a rep and/or vc update? Or will we essentially be playing for nothing?

So it's matchups. And ProAm VC/Rep. If they fix those I'm good.

Oh and that animation where after you dribble and a guy is close you do some type of stutter hunch back thing so they can catch up which I've never seen in my life. That's gotta go too.
