NBA 2K12: Don't Hate The Player...
Posted on January 10, 2012 at 05:30 PM.
So I recently played my roomate in a game of NBA 2K12. I bring my game plan, which is basically play the 'sim' way that most on here do.

My roomate is a cheeser. He tries to steal every inbound, uses 1-2 star players on offense, steal bash is his idea of defense. Turbo around to the paint and dunks with LeBron, D Rose, Rudy Gay, etc. And his friends all the play the same way. I win some, but I also lose some by trying to play 'sim' against the cheeser play style. I don't even want to bring up how annoying their game is. I probably could call them a cheeser and they'd just say I had sour grapes, or probably much worse now that I think of it.

Finally I have decided to give in and play their way whenever I play them. In my head, I know that I'm the better player, but the game won't reflect that since cheese = success.

And ultimately I realized - the 'cheesers', as we call them, don't care that playing this way is annoying as hell, because the game allows them to do it and be successful. And that's my major problem. I'm past hating on cheesers. I'm more pissed that this game lets this method be successful as an effective gameplan. I feel like I'm playing NBA Jam, and not real basketball.

2K is supposed to be a sim,and when 2 sim players go at it it can be very beautiful. But then you have the cheeser game, which makes an embarrassment of the sport to be honest. But again, I can't blame the cheeser too much since 2K lets them do these things and the penalties aren't as strong as they should be.

I know that cheese is going to exist in every game, I just wish that it was harder to do and that players would be rewarded more for playing the 'right' way rather than playing like a chicken with its head cut off. Turbo is the main thing, but steal bashing also shouldn't be able to be successful.

All I can say is - don't hate the player, hate the game.

You're right... but here's the thing: 2k created their hoops franchise as a SINGLE PLAYER GAME. 2k has ALWAYS had the same issues and this is because HUMAN vs CPU interactions rarely expose the fundamental flaws that are programmed into the gameplay. The CPU doesn't take advantage of these "basketball fallacies" because it's programmed not to. But add the 2nd "human element" and all (sim) bets are off... immediately. You instantly see the non-basketball innards of a game that is clearly intended to be played as a single-player RPG and not a multiplayer social hub. So it seems it's not the cheesers who are at fault, it's 2k that doesn't care.

Should be interesting to see what the upcoming competition does to put pressure on 2k's horrible multiplayer/online experience.

You should look around for a sim-association. One that has their own website and league guidelines. I have currently joined one that with about 12 other users and am having a blast. We have our own trade committee, free-agent rules, and thread dedicated to potential trades. Search the forums for like minded players/leagues.

@sactown_13 - I'm in Vets League here at OS, great group of guys that play the game the right way for the most part. I don't even play ranked matches, unless I'm bored and need a reason for a headache, lol. I was just playing offline w my roomates for fun for the first time and noticed that they all play like that.

I know the sim community hates cheesers, but the same time you can't blame them when the game allows them to play like that and be successful.

I'd say 4/5 people that play 2K are 'cheesers'. The sim community is really in the minority, which makes me thankful that 2K does at least give options to let us sim guys play the game we want to. Still, it could be better.

We were playing on default btw, so maybe that had something to do w some of the things flying. I still feel the game out of the box should try to replicate the NBA as closely as possible and things like bashing steal and turbo abuse should be penalized more harshly.

You know how to beat cheesers get Miami and use your entire team to beat them. Cheesers don't realize every star in the game can dominate but two stars are unstoppable. But in all honesty cheesers are easy to beat figure out there weakness up the difficulty to Hall of fame and expose their weak game plan. Played a guy that used Kobe and shot three's all game. 1st game he barely beats me and I had the sixers.

I tried to tell him yeah going for 40 only using Kobe in 5 min qtrs but if I were to do the same he wouldn't see a score with in 20 points.......well with that being said the next three games I destroyed him by 40. He never picked up the sticks again. Its possible to beat cheesers I beat a guy last year with the Nuggets he cheesed with Lebron like most do so after being down by 6 going into the court I dropped 9 wide open threes with Felton without a miss. Of course he quit...

its a sim game, but the majority of gamers outside of "sim-nation" play this way.
They are the majority and it would be a death sentence for any developer to take the cheese out.
never forget this
the majority of gamers want to score 50+ with Lebron and the likes every game.
They want Peterson to run 200+ yards evey game
Pujols to hit a home run everytime they step up to bat.

cheesing shoudl only be used for folks who claim to play sim and then exploit a games weaknes to get the upper hand against another sim opponent.

IMO, a 12-18 year old (my Nephews) only using Lebron and Wade to score and dunk their way to victory isnt cheesing.

I feel your pain though. like someone said find sim gamers to play against.

@tril. This is very true. I think a simple solution would be to have ranked games for casual, default, and sim settings. While "cheesing" would most likely still occur in each of these settings im sure it would be toned down a little.

Yeah the online is a crap shoot for me. Sometimes people play sim-style and I have a great time. Other times it's just some guy doing all the aforementioned cheap tactics. I find that when someone is just dribbling and shooting with the same guy all game, the easiest way to defend it is just let the CPU guard the perimeter. They don't bite on all the unorthodox "stick wiggling" moves that are so hard for me to keep up with. It's not much fun, but it works.

I guess I just like the game to look and feel realistic, and I hate playing against anyone who just runs around in circles waiting for me to get out of position. It just looks so bad on-screen, not to mention very annoying to play against. I really just wish that there was a way to play against the CPU without having to feel cheated all game on FG %s, fouls, steals, loose balls, rebounds, blocks, etc. I ALWAYS come away from a game against the CPU with at least 3 or 4 ridiculous instances of CPU assistance.

One of the great things about NBA2k was that if you played the right way 99% of the time you would beat a cheeeser. I haven't grabbed 12 yet but am having a ball on 11 blowing out the cheesers. Just to let you know I have been ranked in the top 5 monthly. Multiple times.

Even though your dealing with friends one way to find out if someone is a cheeser online is to look at their shot chart from a past game.

Most of the cheesers use Miami, LA or the Bulls. You pick one of those teams and I'm choosing the Suns or TWolves on 11.

By the time I finish with you will think Wesley Jonson is Lebron.

Exactly... A basketball video game is very different than a first person shooter. I think it would take some crazy amount of programming to make a sports game that is made specifically for a user vs. user experience. A 12 vs. 12 football video game would be insane though.

I like this post because I have a friend who plays a cheesier style game. I hate when he reach the whole game trying to steal the ball every time down court . He plays the passing lines well but I know a lot of them are CUP steals. He slows the game down the way he plays...... and yes I do use Miami but all 12 players get involved in my game play. I cant see myself using a center to start my fast-break. Oh well....!!!!!!!!!!!!
