NBA Live 16: Kobe's rating is too high
Posted on September 9, 2015 at 08:41 PM.
The folks at EA Sports are releasing the ratings for the top players at their position for NBA Live 16. They released the top six point guards and I did have a slight problem with the list but decided not to write anything about it. Today they released the top five shooting guards and I have a big problem with this list.
The list consists of James Harden, Klay Thompson, Kobe Bryant, Jimmy Butler and Dwyane Wade. These are all great players but I have a problem with the order. Harden is easily the best of the bunch with a 95 rating. Harden finished 2nd in MVP voting this past season as he led the Rockets to the Western Conference Finals.
Klay Thompson was an All-Star this past season and has a 91 rating. He is a lights out shooter and a solid defender. Kobe Bryant and Jimmy Butler both have an 89 rating and Dwyane Wade has an 88 rating.
I have a huge problem with Kobe Bryant’s rating in this game. There is no way he should be an 89. I voiced my concerns on twitter and got a bunch of replies like, “It’s pure skill” “Oh it’s 5 rings”. Nobody presented a decent argument to justify Kobe’s high rating.
Jimmy Butler was the most improved player this past season. He post career highs all across the board and he probably doesn’t deserve such a high rating either. However he has played and he has improved. Dwyane Wade has been banged up recently and he managed to play 62 games this past season. He showed flashes this season but we all know he can’t do it for a whole season.
Now back to this Kobe argument. A player’s rating should be a reflection of the things they did this past season. One person on twitter asked me, “Should ratings be based on the number of games played?” Well yeah that shows that you played last season. Another person joked, “Pierce played more games than Melo last year he should have a higher rating”.
It seems like everyone was missing the point. You can’t give someone a high rating because they had a great career. When Kobe was 34 during the 2012-13 season he was amazing; he played in 78 games while averaging 27 points. He was doing it all for the Lakers and then he got hurt. It wasn’t a simple injury, he tore his Achilles tendon. That is a major injury for a guy that is 34 years old.
Kobe came back but hurt his knee and was out again. He has played in 41 games over the past two seasons. He averaged 22 points last season but he shot 37% from the field which is a career low and only 29% from beyond the arc. His true shooting percentage was 47% and that was the first time his TS% was under 50%.
The argument of “Pure Skill” is pointless. His skills have diminished because of his age and his injuries. Another brilliant person on twitter said “Injuries have nothing to do with a player’s skill”. Just think about that for a second. Kobe is a legend but his overall of 89 is crazy.
There is no way he has had a better season than both Jimmy Butler and Dwyane Wade these past two seasons. He shouldn’t be the 3rd highest rated shooting guard in the game. He hasn’t played much basketball so his rating shouldn’t be that high.

I feel you bro - argument well spoken - well you know what to do, when you buy it..."edit player" lol

Are you even able to edit players in Live? (I think I read somewhere that it isn't possible this year...though that could have been referring to something different.)

Appreciate it people. And I don't think you can edit players in Live

As with ALL games, OVR Ratings mean nothing, and arent even accurate calculated averages of all ratings. Specify which specific rating is too high, which unrealistic result it produces in game, and then make your point.

@xlatinoheatx - True overall ratings don't matter but I don't know the other ratings in the game. I'm guessing his defense is really high when it shouldn't be.

when you are doing things dynasty mode, fantasy draft & playing online thats where it(OVR) matters

I agree with you 100% about Kobe, but I absolutely think my man Jimmy Buckets deserves an 89, if last season's numbers are the primary criteria. The guy averaged 20 ppg, he shot the ball extremely well, he rebounds like a beast, passes the ball well, and he's an elite defender. If that doesn't get you into the top 5 at your position, what does?

Nba live ratings don't matter because it's not sim!!!

Kobe should be a 85 based 9n age and also missing sometime due to his injuries. You can tell who pays attention to detail and who doesnt. Now if he goes off of course his rating should get a ratings boost. But all we have is opinions.good write up
