A Superficial Wishlist returns! The Show 17 Edition
Posted on July 30, 2016 at 10:41 PM.
Last year I wrote a superficial wishlist for MLB The Show 16. It was a lot of fun to write last year and you can see it here if you want to see what was in last year: http://www.operationsports.com/thesc...r-the-show-16/

Of course, some of these will be repeats of that list so if you scroll back you might see some familiar ideas as The Show team still hasn't added them. But what I saw was the fact I wrote off even the possibility of getting custom music back and yet we did. So there is a huge victory for the ambience of the game. Also, we got closed roofs that was on my list a year ago as well.

But with some victories, you'll see we still have some that needs to happen including my number one.

1. Redone commentary: Last year I stated this was long overdue. This year we hear the same tired commentary. It is time to redo this. I mean Madden appears to be finally giving us an update (and one that might redefine what we expect in video game commentary if they pull it off.) I mean Madden has defined stale commentary for the last several years. If they are going to redo it, then The Show has to evolve and give us new commentary. I really don't know how much more we can take of the same lines year after year. (Likelihood - Unlikely - Why unlikely? Because they never seem to do anything new or fresh with commentary in The Show. Sadly, the stale commentary in The Show is starting to become its "thing.")

2. Bring back custom chants and taunts. What follows is a repeat from my number 4 on last year's list. Why? Because I enjoyed making my own chats and taunts. So re-read the follow or don't. I still want this feature back! I may be in a small number of people that actually enjoyed having the ability to create my own chants. I loved have A Rod show up to bat to my custom "A Roids" chant. This year that is missing. I hate it when features are taken away from us. (Likelihood - Unlikely. I don't believe they'll bring it back. They pulled it and I don't see it coming back after one year. But I do miss it, even if I'm one of the only ones that does. UPDATE FOR THIS YEAR - MAYBE - After getting Sounds of the Show back, who knows? I'd say more of a chance but I may still be the only one that misses it.)

3. Raise the number of Uniform options and give us the year of the Throwback. Just as I said last year, the fact this has a cap on is and has been silly. Other sports titles don't put this cap in place. As a result we don't see as many uniforms as we might see in a season. And some teams have to be missing an alternate due to the cap and them having to choose what to leave out since they have a home, home alt, two throwback home, away, away alt, and two away throwbacks. And why we're at it, tell us the year of the throwback already. That should have always been included. (Likelihood - Unlikely. While I don't thing this would be hard for them, they've stuck to this cap for so long I don't think it is going to change. Plus, I've not really seen many people complain about for them to feel any pressure to change it.)

4. Add in actual minor league parks. I will lobby for this as long as I can or until it happens. While they keep adding to the fictional minor league parks, they have not added any actual parks. The old 2K series actually had some authentic ones so it can be done. Heck, even if they keep the generic and add in a few this year to start and keep adding more over team that would be great too. It would make playing in the farm feel better too. You can start with AAA one year, AA the next and go from there. At the very least give us all the actual Spring Training sites so those games are more fun to play. I mean those would at the very least be a nice touch. I might mention this again later. (Likelihood - Unlikely - I don't see this happening as they keep adding generics and same as above, there is not a huge outcry for it.)

5. Playable Single A teams and Rookie League I want the Single A teams to be something more than a place I put the scrubs. I'd like to see their numbers and see how they are performing on the lower level farm. The Rookie league could be the spot for filler but I really want actual Single A teams. Another one of those options that feels long overdue (Likelihood - Unlikely - This almost feels like another one of those areas of the game they don't see a need to address.)

6. Rain delays, cancelled due to weather, double header rescheduled games. This is something that is starting to feel overdue as well. We got closed roofs, now we need this. I believe All Star Baseball use to have this. If you played in a rainy game, you never knew if the game would finish. Rain in the Show doesn't matter as you know you'll play all nine. Also, I liked having the rescheduled games and the occasional double headers as a result. This addition would be a great add to the Show. (Likelihood - Possible - Last year I stated there wasn't a huge outcry for it. This year I've seen more people bring it up. The more it is discussed, the more I believe the team will get this one in for us. Lets hope this is a big add for next year.)

7. Multi-team trades The fact this wasn't on the list last year is strange. I don't know how I missed this one by the fact The Show doesn't already include multi-team trades is sad in today's day and age of video games. I mean this is the series that included the rule 5 draft but I still can't go find an extra trade partner to pull off my mega deal? This needs to happen. And if I was numbering this in order of importance (and not when I just randomly thought of it while typing) it would be much higher. (Likelihood - Very likely - I feel like this is the type of addition we should see. But then again, I didn't even include it in last year's list and thought of it at 7 on this one because I didn't really realize I couldn't do it until recently. This one, like the rainouts before, doesn't seem as superficial as this list suggest to be.)

8. Split Squad Spring Training games Ah, this one is extremely superficial and yet I want it. I enjoy spring training baseball. I would enjoy playing spring training games if we could get a few little touches like this. (And the actually Spring Training stadiums would be nice. But I think I mentioned that earlier in minor league stadiums.) Split squad games are part of Spring Training and would be another fun feature. (Likelihood - Unlikely - I don't know how hard this would be and even though I want this feature, it is a feature that would only be seen in what is preseason. I don't see them investing the team in it for that reason.)

9. More classic stadiums and older versions of current stadiums I'd like to see them add a few more stadiums like Ebbets Field, Classic Wrigley (before the new monster digital scoreboards), Fenway Park before seats on the monster, Old Busch Stadium, etc. I just think some of these options would be fun and would give us some more options, especially if they aren't going to do anything with the minor league stadiums. (Likelihood - Possible - Some of these, like a Classic Wrigley, they still might have in they database and could add easily, assuming there isn't some rights issue.)

10. Up the atmosphere for meaningful games throughout the season If I'm playing game 45 in a 162 game season, it shouldn't feel the same inside the stadium as game 154 for the division title. The game should know when some of these types of games are happening. It should also up the ante for big rivalry games or games of major importance. If I'm playing a team I'm either chasing in the division or is chasing me, it should feel like the game matters. (Likelihood - Very Likely - I think they really are trying to get this one right but it is hard. I believe they'll do something to add to the feel in some of these game.)

11. Editable draft classes While we're requesting things we'd like, I'm a fan of being able to edit the draft classes. This one isn't major as I can edit anything after the fact, but I'd like to be able to have my custom classes made before the season starts. And not just for real players but some fantasy players I've custom made through the years would be fun to see them drafted and grow. (Likelihood - Highly unlikely - I really do see this being added although it shouldn't hard as they have a pretty good custom system anyway.)

12. Expansion mode/franchise move All-Star Baseball had an expansion mode and it was fun to mess around with. Today, we've seen more of these "fantasy modes" pop up where you can create an expansion team or move a franchise. I'd like to see something like this added to the Show Franchise mode. Would add something fresh for players that don't care to play with a certain team. (Likelihood - Likely - I like this one as likely just because we are seeing NBA 2K17 add this. Madden has had move a franchise for a couple of years now too. I believe this might be a new type of feature they could look at. However, I won't be shocked not see it either.)

13. Stadium creator/editor It would be nice to be able to create a new stadium. And of course if they do an expansion mode or allow us to move franchises, this will have to be created. It could also allow them to not worry about adding minor league parks as we could create them ourselves and upload them to the vault. But I also would like to add a scoreboard or some seating to existing stadiums. This one I doubt we'll see but it would be a nice fun feature. You could even tie adding some of these features to performance within Franchise mode. (Likelihood - Possible for creator, not likely for editor. I believe, especially if they give us an expansion or ability to move franchise, that stadium creator is a must. Stadium editor isn't something I see them including however. It might be a bit too hard for them but doesn't mean I can't list it.)

14. World Baseball Classic The World Baseball Classic is next year. I'd like to be able to play it. As the only true pro baseball game, they need to get this added for next year. You can even add it to Road to the Show mode and allow us to make our national team. (Likelihood - Likely - I believe this mode is very possible as there isn't another company making a simulation baseball game. The Show team I'm sure will add it if they can work out whatever licensing issues there might be.)

15. College World Series Mode This would be fun feature to add, even if it is just for Road to the Show or what not. It would fun to take my favorite college team through the tournament or at least play for them in Road to the Show. (Likelihood - Highly unlikely - I don't see them adding this. Even if they did, no way would we be able to choose all the colleges and would be a feature some would feel was lacking as a result. Still, 2K shocked a lot of people by including select colleges in their My Player mode so it isn't impossible.)

16. Custom/create uniforms for MLB teams in Franchise Another feature that could be tied to performance in Franchise mode. Maybe you're team isn't selling jersey anymore and you feel you need a change. Or maybe you've become so successful that you feel it is time to change your look. (Likelihood - unlikely - I just don't see them doing this with our current crop of uniform options. I mean at the moment they appear to be locked in with this uniform cap.I don't think this would hard, but they haven't shown a willingness to change anything to do with MLB uniforms)

17. Add some more custom music cues Some teams have more than one HR song. Some have more options than one for away pitcher changes. I'm hoping to see a few more options added. (Likelihood - Unlikely - This has been a standard set since they introduced Sounds of the Show. I would love to see more added but I don't see them putting the time into this.)

18. Special uniforms for holidays We saw special uniforms on Mother's Day, Father's Day and Memorial Day this year. While I'm sure MLB keeps these under wraps until game day, I think most of us would be happy to see this year's uniforms pop up when get to those holidays. They already have the pink bats and Jackie Robinson Day jerseys so why not these? (Likelihood - Possible - I could see this being added but I wouldn't expect to be the actual jerseys they wear next year. If it happens it will most likely be the ones we see this year.)

19. All time teams Wouldn't it be fun for The Show to pull a NBA 2K and give us some all time great teams? I mean who wouldn't want to run with the '27 Yankees? What about trying to change history with the 03 Cubs? Or prolong the reign of the the 86 Mets? Yes, they'd have to get some of these players rights to do it but it would be something new play as well. (Likelihood - Unlikely - I don't think it is impossible, but I also don't see it being added. But it would fun to play with some historical teams.)

20. Better fan cut scenes At the moment, the fans aren't shown well. I'd like to see some new and improved fan cut scenes. I would love to see the fans catch home run or foul balls. Even have some where they drop it. At the moment we are only getting the same old stale cut scenes and we are needing more. We need something beside the "dancing crew" that the announcers always seem to find and insult. (Likelihood - Likely - I say likely because we haven't seen any new ones in a few years. I know I said this is why I don't see redone commentary getting done but for this I just have a feeling. I believe they'll want to add a few more to this.)

Well, that's it for this year. I expanded the list since I had so many repeat offenders on this list from last year. Hopefully, we'll see a few more disappear next year as this is addressed.

Great ideas to say the least. I like the idea of actual minor league parks and rain delays (which they mention this year, but of all the rain games I have had, I have never seen one cancelled or delayed. A day-night double header would be interesting. The Single A teams/rookie league would be a great starting point for Road to the Show and Franchise play to see how these players develop.

Yes, the same line after line drives me crazy over the course of the season and by the end I am ready to disable the commentary. Needs a fix here for sure.

Old timer teams would be great or even an entire season from a particular year and allow you to replay it. This feature could be an add-on like they do for Battlefield and other games. Just purchase a season that you want and replay the 1927 season with a team(s) or like you mentioned the 03 Cubs - What could have been.

One thing they need to fix first and foremost is game play. Come up with some simulation sliders that resemble true game play as to close as you can get it. There is too much slider chasing year to year which is evident with the amount of posts in the slider forum here. Graphics are great, but game play needs tuned. I have come up with a set of modifiers which apply prior to the start of my game and they change game to game which presents a new challenge each game. I no longer have to slider chase. This has been my major complaint for years with Baseball and Football both Madden and NCAA when they used to that. EA puts so much in to graphics they have left the game for the customer to figure out - not right in my book and it goes to show they care more about graphics which yes are close to being as real as they can get than actual game play. It appears they take little or no suggestions in this field and each year customers and true baseball fans after left to test countless numbers of hours to get a slider set that offers them a challenge and is in line with realistic statistics and game play.

EA needs to look to Operations Sports MLB Slider forum for advice and technical expertise for MLB 17 to fine tune its game play. I would be more than happy to help out I am sure with many others to get this system right.
