A New Generation, NBA 2K vs Madden fight for #1 top seller status in the sports genre
Posted on September 29, 2013 at 06:26 AM.
As all of you know a new generation of consoles is upon us and with that comes opportunity. Opportunity to further establish your company's cash cow sports title as the top seller among the genre or relinquish this honor to a developer who is hungrier and more in tuned with consumers expectations. As this generation comes to a close many fans are wondering why 2K Sports and EA Sports have been suspiciously quiet about there Next-Gen offerings. Could it be the developers aren't being mindful of last generations awful launch title offerings and the damage it caused to there reputation. Are they doomed to repeat history or is something much more important and monumental happening right before our very eyes. From as far back as I can remember until this very day Madden is known for being the top selling sports title in America by a large margin. In 2009 Madden 10 sold 5.32 million copies while NBA 2K10 sold just 1.89 million. Fast forward a mere 4 years later and Madden 13 has sold 4.87 million copies vs. NBA 2K13 4.81 million copies and it doesn't take a genius to figure out that this Next-Gen is a high stakes race for supremacy and the honor of being known as the Sports Videogame and developer of choice. That's a prestigious recognition, one that has helped EA to be the huge corporation they are today. It was unthinkable just a few years ago that we would be having this conversation. I mean football after all is America's most popular sport and basketball comes a distant second. It would show on a yearly basis in the disparity in sales between football and basketball. Not long ago you would have been laughed at for saying one day a basketball game would outsell the mighty Madden's NFL title. Who could fathom the thought of the undisputed champ potentially being knocked off his perch that he stood atop for so many years not in the least bit worried that a NBA game could touch it in sales. Well the unthinkable today seems not only possible but within a hair's reach. Both EA and 2K know what's at stake and have planned way ahead for this Next-Generation's battle. How well they thought out there strategy and delegated there resources will go a long ways toward crowning the victor and this generations King of the sports videogame mountain.
