RIP Jim Vance. He was the NBC4 lead anchor in DC since 1972. Vance, along with Doreen Gentzler and George Michael on sports, often legitimately drew a bigger rating at 11pm for the news than everything in primetime for the major networks combined.

Glad that Jim was honored with a spot on the Ben's Chili Bowl mural before he passed.

If the sleeve is supposed to make the hot pocket crispy, how come the crispiest part of the hot pocket is the ends, the parts outside the sleeve?

What's up with people grunting while shitting in public? 2 times this week I've had to misfortune of experiencing a nearby stall full of a guy who must have been 8 CM dilated and pushing out a ginormous butt baby. So nasty. I guess the courtesy flush is a lost art.

First time for everything I guess ... in 30+ years of concerts, big & small, never before have I seen a crowd that actually detracted from a show by basically doing ... nothing.

In my life I've never seen more people (90% of 200-300) utterly disinterested in their surroundings.

There'd have been more interested atheists at the Southern Gospel Quartet Convention.

It was frustrating, bewildering, and infuriating all at once.

I still can't figure out how many were family members (this was a "local" date for a national touring band) and how many were casual locals in a pretentious little community that just happened to wander in (and paid $20 for the wandering).

How two good bands could do perfectly fine performances & have things turn out so utterly pissy may be a mystery to me indefinitely.

Bridge To Grace (who grew up, give or take, 15 mins from there) and Seasons After.

I've seen both previously, the primary difference last night being the crowd & the layout of the venue. This bore no resemblance to the previous shows.

Decent enough room for a small chamber music ensemble or maybe a Borscht Belt comic. Worst place, by far, I've ever seen for anything remotely rock.

A number of local musicians have given me some insight after I ranted similarly on FB. It seems that local/regulars were the likely source of the problem last night. The place is somewhat notorious for dead a.f. crowds.

How is it possible for Gmail and Calendar to both be crashing in Chrome but not any other browser, especially when all other sites are working in Chrome without issue?

Probably a sign you're getting old when you start finding women in adult diaper commercials attractive.

Nice to see Snopes get the funding they needed after all these years. Lots of good will out there to be rewarded for. In just over 24 hrs they've hit their funding goal for the site, with more to come.

Didn't even make it 30 days with the new PC before needing a complete wipe and reinstall. Still got more than 60 days on the refund policy and I'm already pricing Macbooks just in case.

It feels like this would be the appropriate time to do book summaries called Cliff Huxtable Notes where it's just an old creepy guy talking about how he would drug women within the confines of the plot.

So basically, they're all mini-Brett Easton Ellis novels.

I can't decide if I find any of the sisters in Haim attractive. When they're not playing/singing, I don't find them attractive, but seeing them playing/singing, I find them quite attractive.

Kinda like the Willis sisters maybe? Mostly they look like Bruce in drag but occasionally from certain angles a couple aren't that awful.

Is it my imagination or are most blu-rays first out starting at $25 where they used to be at $20.

I got used to the $20 price point with hopes of a drop to $15-$16 but that doesn't seem to be happening as much recently.

Oh that. I rather have the disc, like a real book vs kindle (although I'm slowly breaking down). Not sure I've got enough comcast bandwidth for streaming all the time.

Probably 110%.

But fair point, and I don't follow the home video market closely, admittedly. But with Blockbuster, Hollywood, etc. all going belly up, what is left? Red box?

I hadn't bought many movies within the last 5 years. But the thought of purchasing either of the 2 new star wars films on Blu Ray never even crossed my mind. I suspect I may never buy another movie again.

I think I may buy/RedBox movies again once I get a 4K TV/BR player. Blu-rays are far better quality than streaming right now (due to discs being able to push a much higher Mbps than streaming), with 4K, it's even more pronounced (I have read that 4K streaming is akin in quality to 1080p Blu-rays).

I consider myself to be far more knowledgeable about geography than most. It was always one of my favorite subjects in Trivia Pursuit, I enjoy looking at maps and imagining places and I found I could recall details and facts in the subject better than others.

So it was with some considerable surprise for me to discover tonight that Mallorca and Ibiza are not in fact located on the Spanish Iberian peninsula but are actually on the Balaeric Islands off the eastern coast, in the Mediterranean Sea.

And now I want to go there.

Soft Cell's Tainted Love was released July 7th 1981, which is apparently closer to the end of WWII than it is to today.

FB reminded me that one year ago today was the Stuck Mojo show I went to with the kid in the 'burbs north of Atlanta.

That was basically milepost for the last "thing" of summer before we turned attention fully to getting him packed off for his freshman year of college.

Today I'm actually more bummed that he leaves in just under two weeks than I was then. A year ago it was the dread of the unknown, now it's more like the dread of the known.

That's interesting. My son leaves for college in 2 1/2 weeks for the first time, so I'll have to compare this summer with next.

Every situation will surely be different but, for me, last year was "okay, surely this will suck"

And, sure enough, it did suck pretty bad. But you're learning to cope with that new reality, trying to figure out how to handle it, you're bummed but you're thinking "okay, maybe this or maybe that".

THIS summer? I now know how much it sucks, and it's honestly been a pretty cool a.f. summer with him. And KNOWING the rather drab next few months that lie ahead are actually rougher than the unknown was.

I'm talking "maybe a pliable doctor & some better living through chemistry can help with this" degree of dread. (And that's something I haven't resorted to even thinking about in going on two decades)

Sarahah is a fun app. It's cool to see what people have to say about you under the veil of anonymity. I did chuckle at one that said I'm a doofus, but the best kind of doofus, and to never change. I was like okay cool, someone in my Facebook circle doesn't take me seriously. Cross-referencing it with people online at the time gave me two likely suspects - one whom I haven't seen in almost 20 years, and a doofus charge from back then would be accurate. The other is probably projection, because I damn sure don't take them seriously.

There comes a point when you realize that in terms of unexpectedly outliving their contemporaries, Keith Richards is just the Rock & Roll version of Willie Nelson.

I'd like to see an all-star tour of guys like that called the How the F are You Still Alive tour.
