1976 FOOL Classic thread
Attention Alejandro Medine:
You did not make my roster because of your stellar 36 range in the outfield. You were brought in to hit against left handed pitching. When you hit 25 for 134 against Leftys and have an outstanding .267 OBP and a Slugging percentage below .300 against them, I am not sure that you lived up to expectations. Don't worry though, it won't keep you from the FOOL Classic..... You will have a seat right next to Ken Connolly's wife in the bleachers. |

So my early comments about Columbus based on what I have seen for our upcoming matchup..
It is interesting to see Ruben Mendoza (a lefty) still hits better against left handed pitching than right handed pitching. There is absolutely nothing in his ratings that would indicate that this would be the case, but it is, and has always been for his entire career. Now that I have mentioned this, I wonder if Columbus will move him up in the batting order against leftys now from the 9 hole Ken Connolly has had one of the most yo-yo careers of any player I have ever seen. I wonder if it is any indication of his steroid cycles..... 1966: .267 1967: .315 1968: .284 1969: .357 1970: .320 1971: .231 1972: .331 1973: .229. Looks like he needs a new supplier though because he unfortunately is out of gas. I am really interested to see how Columbus handles the issue regarding their best two hitters both play the same position. Holden Matthews had an OPS of .876 while Joaquin Guerrero had a .907 and neither can play defense worth a damn. For the games in Valdosta, it will be interesting if one will end up out of position somewhere else a la Jose Canseco world of wonder in left field or such... or if one will sit. If one sits, will it be the 46 million dollar superstar Holden Matthews or the younger, cheaper and better Guerrero. I wonder how much it would complicate things if the fact is mentioned that Guerrero hit .042 vs leftys and appears to be fairly worthless against them. Anibal Ramirez is a really nice catcher. FOOL used to be dominated by endless number of really promising looking Catching prospects once upon a time. That seems to have dried up the last few years, so a player as good as Ramirez at catcher seems to be a rarity these days. I think Columbus has done an excellent job of balancing their lineup.. really a good blend of both Righty and lefty batters all the way through that makes it a little more difficult to try to game plan for appropriately. I can't believe that "Dash" is still playing, and even moreso is possibly pitching back in Valdosta against us in the FOOL Classic. Patrick "Dash" Bentley reluctantly gave way to his starting pitching spot in 1967 to the rookie of the year that season. A Young pitcher named Carlos Gonzales. I am guessing that Bentley won't end up in the Columbus rotation for the classic, but it is neat seeing him still around. I wonder how much of an issue it is going to be for Columbus that they really are very heavily right-handed in their pitching staff. |

No, it's not that nuanced that way. He'll say no and then you can offer him what he wants if he turns that down.

Market value doesn't go up over the pre-FA period or based on other players. It's solely based on the players performance over the past season or the player's perceived value of themselves in the market. OOTP is not that sophisticated. |

Thanks for the info. I feel like playing my old "Yankee" team on fast forward just to get the EXP. I clearly lack with OOTP9, the last ver I played was #5. But I like the one game at a time pace with that one so I'm gonna learn the hard way! Yup, good old school of HARD KNOCKS... burn, baby, burn or as I used to say in my dog days: SHAKE IT BABY, SHAKE IT BABY, SHAKE IT, DON'T BRAKE IT. From some song, yes I loved to dance with all the ladies back in the day (free pass to 1st base, if done respectfully). Now I'm too tried most of the time from all this, work, work, work, &... anyways you get point. Well, too bad we gotta wait to tomorrow, I'll like to see who wins. It's for the best I know. Good way to build suspense that's for sure. Later

I say Columbus is the favorite in this one. Valdosta has the experience, but Columbus should win this one on merit. I hope that Holden Matthews brought over all of his CL trade secrets to prepare the Crusaders Nation for this one. Tonight, the entire RL wears Purple and Gold!

I agree, that i think Columbus probably is favored. I am pretty suprised I actually even made it this far.
I was hoping that he would have been around some this weekend to talk up the series, but he's busy I guess on weekends! Good luck to Columbus though, hope either way that it is a good series! |

Hey guys, I'm around now. I'm working on getting the lineup set how I want it. Quick question though, is it no-DH in ALL parks, or just the CL park? Thanks!

Yeah, it was a perfect weekend to have a housewarming Fall weekends suck in terms of time on the computer for me. I'm fortunate enough to have Buckeye football tickets, so I'm usually gone there, and since my wife and I hardly see each other during the week, we're usually pretty busy on the weekends. Good luck to Valdosta as well, and maybe we'll see Bentley for a game |

Its going to be tough for me with the pitching staff, especially the starters. Needless to say, due to my lack of leftys in the rotation (1 in the pen), Alan needs only to set his RHP lineups.
The Matthews/Guerrero debate will be settled. That is all I can say |

I'm not sure if I will be sticking around right now, as I need to get a workout in tonight, and if I don't go soon, I will talk myself out of it later.
So if none of you see me for a bit, that's why. Good luck to both teams in the Classic. Despite being CL now, I am rooting for Columbus simply because Alan's won enough, Turner has some of my Atlanta players, and I still have much more of a history with the RL than the CL.

Jesus Ramos signed with San Diego, 2 years/$5.3 million
Ricardo Gonzales signed a 1-year deal with Texas worth $1.3 million Richard Tabarchi signed a two-year deal worth $1.5 million with Baltimore. TEACH make sure that you re-sign Gonzales or else he'll be a free agent in about a month again, since that 1-year deal only counts for this season, not next. Just FYI. |

I hope Tabarchi finds a good home there, that was probably my toughest move, but I had to make it to clear his 2 mill off the books.

In a thriller Holden Matthews got on in the bottom of the 10th on an error. After advancing to third on a sac bunt, Ken Connolly came in to pinch run and advanced on a 3-1 single by Jose Zamora to give the Crusaders a shot to capture the FOOL Classic Wednesday night in Valdosta. |
