AU RB Jacobs to transfer to Clemson, GT, or Huskers...

Jacobs considering three schools

03/24/04

AUBURN -- Former Auburn running back Brandon Jacobs said he plans to take visits to Clemson, Georgia Tech and Nebraska sometime before the summer and will probably transfer to one of those three schools.

Jacobs, who rushed for 446 yards last year, will have to sit out the 2004 season under NCAA transfer rules. He will be a senior in 2005.

He's transferring because of a lack of playing time at Auburn but remains on good enough terms with his old team to become an occasional visitor at Auburn's spring practices. He visited Tuesday's practice and is still attending classes at Auburn through the end of the semester.

Personally, I would LOVE to see Jacobs transfer to Clemson's rival, South Carolina. Then in 2005 when Auburn plays South Carolina, you'd have...

Former Gamecock Kenny Irons for AU vs Former Tiger Jacobs for USC. Talk about message board chatter.

What school do you think he would get the most touches at?

Well....

Clemson..Pass, Pass, Pass.

GT..more balanced.

Nebraska...depends on the new philosophy by Callahan. Jacobs would have thrived under the old Osborne "Option" philosophy.

My bet is on Georgia Tech or Nebraska.

I disagree. That was a QB-oriented system. IB's at Nebraska typically got the ball more on option pitches than on traditional handoffs. The offense needed an IB that could get to the corner, take the pitch, and outrun the defense. I'm not saying Jacobs would be unwelcome in Lincoln during the old regime, but he was not the typical NU IB.

Nebraska I-Backs use a combination of size/speed. 6'0 and 210 is a good place to start. (Green, Phillips). Smaller, speed oriented HB's like David Horne haven't done much in the system. I wouldn't say they run outside more than inside. A lot of setting up the option and being able to run it correctly was being able to run at the defense, wear them down. Lots of dives and off-tackles.

Now on to Jacobs, he is huge. I don't remember an I-Back at Nebraska that size. I don't know what his speed is like, but he would certainly add a new element to a backfield which is full of smaller backs like Cory Ross and David Horne.. Anyone know what Jacobs' 40 time is?

He runs about in the 4.6-4.65 range when he weighs 260lbs, which is what he weighed his entire tenure at Auburn.

When he's in trim shape, which is about 245lbs, he runs in the mid 4.5 range. His speed is exceptional for a guy of his size. He has huge calves and a strong base too, which makes him hard to take down. Auburn just had way too many tailbacks in their rotation for him to receive the kind of playing time that he was looking for.
