    HD-DVD add on or PS3?

I am itching to get into the Hi Def DVD arena but can't decide on whether to just get the HD-DVD attachment for my 360 or buy a PS3 for the Blu-Ray.

Price: HD-DVD attachment is much less then PS3

Sound/Picture: HDMI picture + sound on the PS3 is better then component and dolby digital on Xbox Hd-Dvd.

Format: Who knows which format will win so I might as well just enjoy one of them now.

    Thoughts anyone?

    tough call...

i went with ps3 but only because I feel in the future i will be interested in some of the ps3 exclusive games...

if you're in it only for movies, then i say go the cheaper route and get the hd-dvd add on.

to me, the picture doesn't look any different.

Re: HD-DVD add on or PS3?

What Airlobo said. If it's just for movies I get the HD-DVD drive. I have it and it's great. HDMI won't make that big of a difference (especially if your TV does 1080p over component or VGA) so picture quality is probably a wash. Sound will be better with the PS3 though if you have the right setup.

On the other hand, if you're going to use the PS3 to play games too, and you can afford it then go for the PS3.

If you have the money, I'd go for the PS3.

I've got both, the picture on both look great, a wash to me. The sound I can't help you on since I'm just listening through tv speakers. If you're "itching" that bad and money isn't an issue, check the blu-ray exclusives vs. the hd-dvd and pick up whichever interests you more.

If its more for the movies then definently go with the PS3, the Blu-Ray exclusive studios are far better then the ones on HD-DVD, picture quality isnt a huge difference at this point but being able to get any Fox, Disney, Lions Gate, MGM, Sony movie that comes out is a huge plus in my book. Only movies you would miss out on are from Universal since WB went format neutral, meaning some films like The Good Shepherd, School for Scoundrels, Smokin Aces etc but at the same time will have access to X-Men, Spiderman, POTC etc. Just seems like the better choice at this point imo.

Re: HD-DVD add on or PS3?

I've had the opportunity to view and listen to, hd-dvd(X360), and my conclusion is this. Words can't explain lossless audio or uncompressed audio. THIS SOUND QUALITY CAN'T be offered over digi opt. When you experience a game like resistance in 7.1 lossless audio or uncompressed audio 5.1/7.1 there's no equal. PQ hd- dvd and blu-ray are on par(PS3 X360) what separates them is sound.
You just have to experience the immerse vitality aural delight. You can't get this sound on DVD, you can't get this sound through component and if its offered it will be compressed.

You want hi-def from now and into the future, chose PS3, or a stand alone blu-ray or hd- dvd player the x360 add-on is a filler giving you half th experience. HI-DEF visuals and SOUND in the console market can only be found on the PS3. You will not understand what i'm saying until you witness it for yourself with a HDMI 1.3 receiver Do you want all the fetures on the back of the box, or do you want half? Uncompressed audio takes up a lot of space.

backbreaker, right now were not getting full lossless or TrueHD audio since receivers or TVs aren't at HDMI 1.3. If you compare BD to the 360 add on than yes, the PS3 will win in AQ. Compare the PS3 to the Toshiba A2, XA2, or even the A20 and that is where HD-DVD has a slight advantage with the stand alone players.

I know hdmi 1.3 is not available right now. Get back to me when you've heard resistance in 7.1 lossless audio or Casino Royale uncompressed. My point is you will never experience those fidelities in component or dvd. Why buy something that is obsolete in its inception. The PS3 is already to go at HDMI 1.3

so why buy something that only gives you half of the experience ? you're cheating yourself . Spend $200 now and then you replace it later for additional functionality .

I'm not talkig about, you i'm speaking in general and to those who buy an add-on, that will only offer half the functionality. If you still have resistance check out the 7.1 lossless audio in that game, its an aural treat.

breaker, what tune do I have man? Did I say anything bad about the PS3 or SQ in general? I'm just saying, with some movies the SQ from HD-DVD is better than BD and vice versa. I'm format neutral, so I have no favoritism with one over the other. Your the one here getting all defensive.

if you notice in one of my post in this thread Iwas offering up my opinion in reference to the thread starter. I'm not defensive at all, simply responding to your retort if you feel that i'm posturing then I apologise. There is no agenda, I suggest you look at the title of thread. You guys really need to give this VS. banter a rest.

It always come back to this idiotic bs

I agree with you that the add-on lacks in AQ compared to a stand alone player. I think MS is fixing it in their next Update. I think that many are finding the MS HD-DVD drive a good value as if the format tanks, their only out $200 and not $500, $600, or even $700. I looked at the feature set of the MS HD-DVD and I decided not to buy it do to the lack in AQ + the upconversion of SD-DVD's is not as good as a stand alone. I think that many on here are very happy with their MS HD-DVD.
