This is the only post that I would listen to in this thread since it is unbiased. Check out which studios have movies that would most interest you and choose the format that studio is currently offering their library on.

I will not argue that fact that HDMI 1.3 offers a better experience, but do you have a TV and a Receiver that support HDMI 1.3 today? I highly doubt it since their not on the market, so the advantage here is that the PS3 is very future proof, but can't be fully taken advantage of in 2007. You are starting to sound like a Best Buy employee, selling people on the features even though they can't take advantage of them since TV HDMI is at 1.2 and same thing with the Receivers.

For FlyingFinn, there are quite a bit of things that he will need to consider:

*BD Exclusive Movies vs. HD-DVD Exclusive Movies
*Do you want another console in a PS3? Nice thing is that you can watch BD movies + play some games.
*MS HD-DVD Players is lacking in Audio Formats + your 360 is on during the viewing of the film which could be a turnoff to some.
*Do you just want to watch Hidef movies?

Re: HD-DVD add on or PS3?

I'm a bias best buy employee that will save you some dough. Add-on, or PS3, all day everyday PS3. PS3, or standalone hd-dvd, standalone hd-dvd all day everyday. Spend 200 now and a few hundred later, spend 500 now you're future proof, and less headaches.

A blu-ray player that can be updated with a click of a button where are you gonna find that? codecs improve so does your player(firmware) i.e PSP.

The PS3, will not become antiquated and or dated because of new technologies because of firmware updates. These are things people don't consider in their purchase its a first of its kind on the market. Yes I'm bias, but my bias will save you some long term dough.

              Exactly.

The sound isn't an issue to me, because I haven't and won't be buying a 400-500 dollar receiver to get the higher end sound. Plain ol 5.1 sounds great to me. I realize that sound is a major part of the "HD" experience, but I'm very pleased with what I currently have.

Comes down to paying $200 vs $600. If you go PS3, then you need to buy a HDMI/component cable, you're going to want to buy a remote (the PS3 controller sucks as a remote IMO). The 360 HD-DVD add on comes with the remote and a movie (King Kong), so you can basically come home and fire it up. The Blu-ray player has the bigger exclusives right now, especially with Casino Royale.

Go here, http://www.highdefdigest.com for unbiased reviews and opinions on movies already out, plus release dates for future movies.

There's one thing to look at if sound is huge to you like Backbreaker said, buy a stand alone HD-DVD player, since Blu-ray doesn't have any movies doing Dolby True HD. IF thats a big deal like BB said, then it's a no brainer to buy the stand alone unit over the PS3, cheaper and better sound.

May 22nd is a huge day for both formats, so neither is going anywhere soon. Blu-ray has the Pirates moves coming out, which is going to be HUGE IMO and make Casino Royale's sales look small compared to their sales upon release. HD-DVD has the Matrix trilogy coming out same day, already burning up the Amazon top 100 charts, last I checked the Ultimate box was #25 on Amazon's top HD sellers.

Movies, movies, movies should and will decide which way you go.

Compare the PS3 to the Toshiba A2, XA2, or even the A20 and that is where HD-DVD has a slight advantage with the stand alone players.
You can get TrueHD on the HD-A1 through analog out.

EG, my point to breaker is that there are people on here like I stated a few posts back that are very happy with the MS HD-DVD drive. If it wasn't for my fear of leaving the 360 on for a long period of time, I would probably own the drive also as its cheaper. It's one of my biggest worries as Ive mentioned in the past.

I've read so many different reports on the audio side of HD for both BD and HD-DVD that I've given up. LOL! EG had sent me a cool link to a thread over at highdefdigest where an audiophile explained it all. If EG is can be kind and post that link, it would be cool.

I say go the cheapest route until a clear HD optical standard arrives for movies. That would mean buy the hd-dvd add-on or just wait for one to come out on top.

Re: HD-DVD add on or PS3?

Thanks for the input guys... After looking at the exclusive list for each format, I am to the point where I may need to buy both

On thing I am worried about with the 360 add-on is that since the 360 is running all 3 cpu's, is it going to be louder then when playing games. Which is loud in my case. If someone were to whisper in the movie, I don't know if I would be able to hear it.

I hooked my 360 up to the NYKO intercooler and it's noticeably loud. I have to jack up the volume to drown it out.

I have both the PS3 and the 360 with the HD-DVD drive. My 360 is hooked up via vga for video and optical for audio. My PS3 is hdmi.

I can't tell any difference between the two. Maybe one has to be an audio-videophile to see and hear the difference, but I don't.

I have Resistance and yeah, it sounds good, but no better than several games I've played on the 360.
