My buddy and I play on online CFM together with us each controlling our own team. We both have ps3 but i was thinking of upgrading to ps4...so my question is if i get ps4 and he still has ps3 would we still be able to play in the same online CFM?

You both need ps4 to play together.

no you wont unfortunately, you can see him in your friends list. but unless they have a ps4 you wont be able to play cross platform
