When do player "decide" to retire?

I just finished my first year in a Patriots CFM.

To my surprise, Tom Brady retired even though he had a few more years on his contract. Also, I got no warning about this, and didn't plan for drafting a QB in the draft since I figured I had Brady for a few more years.

Is it possible to re-load my CFM from a previous save from earlier in the season and sim ahead and see if he'll not retire? Or does he always retire?

When do players "decide" this? Is it when the Playoffs transition to the Off-Season? Or is it when the Regular Season transitions to the playoffs? Anyone know?

Certain players seem to retire at the same point in every franchise I have checked and Tom Brady is one of those players. Players retire after the season is advanced from the superbowl to the offseason.

In all 3 CFM's I have done Brady always retires after year 1 with Peyton.

I don't know if players retire due to age or years played but I know someone said that with Madden 25 they used the roster editor and changed years and/or age of the players they didn't want to retire right away.

Players decide on retirement after their teams season is done:


i.e. Superbowl winning team - decisions made after advancing from superbowl week


Playoff team - decisions made after advancing from postseason match they lost, e.g. Patriots lose in the wildcard, Tom Brady's decision will be made when advancing from the wildcard


Non-playoff teams - decisions made when advancing from week 17 i.e. when the coaches get fired and you get your players yearly xp bonuses.


So if a player retires in the offseason and you have a backup save from before that teams "end of season", then you can reload and advance again to see if it changes. I did this with Chad Greenway after the Vikings end of season was the divisional game.




The QB retire trait might not save the oldest of QB’s like Manning or Brady though L


Alternatively, this worked in M15… not tried it in M16 yet. If you take over the retiring player in player mode before advancing the superbowl week, once you reach the offseason it will come up with a prompt to retire your player. If you ignore this prompt and then relinquish control of the player in week 1 of the preseason it comes up with mysterious message about the return of said player.


!! DON’T GIVE UP CONTROL OF AN OWNER TO DO THIS THOUGH, YOU CAN’T RECONTROL OWNERS!! Instead, release the player from your team, as a coach sign them to another team, retire the coach and take over the player. Then follow the method above.
