Old school 09 RTTS fielding question..

As a new owner of MLB 09(just bought a PS3 and bought 09 used to hold me over), I have a RTTS question. I created a second basemen and in probably 40 or so stolen base attempts by the opponent I have yet to tag somebody out on a stolen base attempt. I get to the bag in time, but my guy almost never even lays down the tag. Is it because my stats are still really low? Again, I see the guy stealing and I run to the base, but I have not yet been able to tag a guy out. This makes me think I should be doing more than just running to the base. At the same time maybe it has something to do with my meager fielder rating as a youngster. Sorry for my ignorance. Also, I realize this has maybe been addressed before..and I did use search. I just couldn't find exactly what I was looking for. Thanks in advance.
