Jets coach Alosi suspended indefinitely

This guy should never work in the NFL again.

Sal Alosi tripped up when he told the New York Jets his side of the story.

Now the embattled assistant coach could be looking to save his job.

Alosi, the Jets' strength and conditioning coach, was suspended indefinitely by the team Wednesday after he acknowledged that he told five inactive players to stand next to each other for a punt return, during which he tripped Miami Dolphins rookie cornerback Nolan Carroll.

"As we continued our investigation, we discovered some new information," Jets general manager Mike Tannenbaum said in a conference call from the NFL owners meetings in Dallas, "and the players at the Miami game were instructed by Sal to stand where they were to force the gunner in the game to run around them."

That was information Alosi didn't initially volunteer Monday, according to Tannenbaum. The Jets suspended Alosi for the season without pay and fined him an additional $25,000 after he stuck out a knee and tripped Carroll, who was covering the punt during the third quarter of the Dolphins' 10-6 victory Sunday.

"Over the course of the next couple of days, more information came out that really doesn't sit well with us," Tannenbaum said.

During a news conference Monday, Alosi fought back tears as he called his actions -- tripping Carroll -- "inexcusable and irresponsible." Alosi also said no one was instructed to stay up on the sideline to prevent Dolphins players from running out of bounds on kicks. Miami's Reshad Jones was penalized for doing that earlier in the game.

This could be just the tip of the iceberg. Now, there is speculation that Ryan knew about it, and it happened in other games this season.

The Jets aren't the only team that sometimes strategically places players and/or coaches on the sidelines to prevent the gunner from running in the bench area.

I think the guy should have been fired immediately for the tripping. It was absolutely disgusting and could have cost Carroll his career. I was struck at how lightly the media took it. Michael Wilbon, who can get blustery over the most innocuous things, laughed at this.

With all that being said, I don't think the guy should have been "fired" for setting the wall. Tripping, yes. Telling the players to line up in a wall, no. First off, if everyone makes a wall behind the white line, then there is no infraction as far as I'm concerned. Secondly, I'm having a hard time believing that he did something like this on his own. In which case, he's a fall guy.

Strictly speaking, it's supposed to be an infraction. There is the wide solid white, that is only for chain gang and officiating crews. Behind that is another line, between those two is only for coaches and substitution players. Behind that line, bounded behind by a dotted white line, is the bench area for all other players. Behind the dotted line is media and others. I could see the NFL making that a point of emphasis, it had gotten sloppy and the rule was simply ignored for a long time.

I don't think the guy should have been fired for it, especially considering that it seemed like it was team-orchestrated. I understand, what the guy did was wrong, but it seemed like the Jets organization hung him out to dry. Why is it that players can go out and practically murder, rape, and do other illegal activities and still get a pass to play a game, yet a no name coach is to lose his career over simply following orders.

Yea, the lining of players/coaches as close to the white part of the sideline happens everywhere apparently. This dude just obviously forgot his brain that day
