you don't have to mess with custom tactics... that's really for people who don't understand defending.
if the guy is chipping balls over your back line, then you're probably not defending properly....

I play on all manual, 20min, slow, world class, broadcast.
yes... skill moves work! but you need to time it well... you need to execute the move with space between you and the defender.

there is no point...
unless you want to be stuck playing against boring semi-pro level AI.

a tip for those new to manual passing... start on overcast dry setting... you'll need a bit more power in each pass but overall... the ball will move slower.

yes... you can flick it over your head with your first touch... depending on the situation.
the other alternative to shielding/holding up play...

Play SLOW speed for those who use manual settings...
even 10 minute games in slow speed, the game moves too fast...
try 15/20 minute games... you'll feel the players fatigue... their sharpness...

you should definitely use manual shooting!
it's more frustrating than passing... but once you get the hang of it... you'll have so many more options in...
