There is plenty of compression (midfield), but in that instance the ball is cleared and instead of the team that cleared the ball moving up as a unit, they are playing as if they are set on parking...

I've used something similar before, and it's just not proper football to have players that close together and squeezed in. It leaves no room for the lines to decompress:
