MINNESOTA OUSTS NORTH CAROLINA, 74-72

Mar. 22, Denver CO – Minnesota eliminated No. 2 North Carolina from the Midwest Regional, 74-72 to advance to the Sweet Sixteen. The No. 7 seed Golden Gophers will next meet the No. 3 George Mason Patriots on March 27 at the Ford Field. Dan Coleman scored 16 points for Minnesota, which led from start to finish. Lawrence McKenzie added 14 while Brandon Smith had 10. The Tar Heels, which came close in the end, were led by Tyler Hansbrough and Wayne Ellington with 23 and 22 points respectively.

Upset-conscious No. 12 Duquesne and No. 13 Ohio State knocked each other out for the right to meet No. 1 Oregon. In the end it was the Dukes by 2, 76-74. Kieron Achara led the onslaught with a double-double performance of 19 points and 10 rebounds. Aaron Jackson added 16. Jon Diebler was the Buckeyes leading scorer with 14 points. Othello Hunter and 7’0 Kosta Koufos contributed 13 and 12.

GONZAGA ROUTS DUKE, 96-74

Mar. 22, Little Rock AR – Gonzaga routed Duke at the Alltel Arena, 96-74, for the right to meet No. 3 Kansas State when Sweet Sixteen goes to the US Airways Center on March 27. The Bulldogs led by a single point at halftime. 49-48, but blew the game wide open in the second half as the Blue Devils shot blanks and failed to contain Josh Heytvelt. Heytvelt scored a game-high 31 points and 9 rebounds. Micah Downs came off the bench and made 19 while Jeremy Pargo added 13. Greg Paulus led Duke with 19 points. Demarcus Nelson and Gerald Henderson had 13 and 11 respectively. In the other West Regional quarterfinal, the top seed UCLA Bruins meets the No. 4 Southern Illinois Salukis.

SYRACUSE KNOCKS OFF TOP SEED MEMPHIS, 76-69

Mar. 23, Birmingham AL – No. 8 Syracuse knocked out No. 1 Memphis from the NCAA Basketball Tournament, 76-69. The Orangemen will next meet the No. 4 Kansas Jayhawks on March 28 as Sweet Sixteen gets underway at the Reliant Stadium. Donte Greene scored a game-high 27 points for Syracuse while Paul Harris had a double-double afternoon with 16 markers coupled with 11 boards. Eric Devendorff added 13 points. Derrick Rose led Memphis with 12 points while Antonio Anderson and Doneal Mack both had 11. Robert Dozier grabbed 10 rebounds but were not enough as the Orangemen, led by the game-leading 13 boards of Arinze Onuaku, outrebounded the Tigers, 44-31.

Meanwhile, No. 11 Winthrop scored its second upset win at the expense of No. 3 Tennessee. The Eagles came from behind to edge out the Volunteers, 79-76, at the St. Pete Times Forum. Winthrop will meet the No. 2 Indiana Hoosiers on March 28. The Volunteers failed to stop Michael Jenkins, who had 31 points including 7 treys. Andy Buechert added 17 while Chris Gaynor had 11. Chris Lofton led Tennessee with 21 points followed by Jajuan Smith and Tyler Smith with 17 and 16 markers respectively.

MICHIGAN STATE EXITS EAST REGIONAL

Mar. 23, Raleigh NC – No. 3 Michigan State made an exit at the East Regional as the No. 6 Florida State Seminoles upended the Spartans in overtime, 69-66, at the RBC Center. Toney Douglas scored a game-high 17 points for Florida State for the right to meet the 2nd seeded Kentucky Wildcats at the Charlotte Bobcats Arena on March 28. The Spartans outrebounded the Seminoles, 34-29, but lost steam in the end. They were led by Raymar Morgan’s 16 points and Goran Suton’s 9 markers and 11 rebounds. Big East teams, No.1 Providence Friars and the No.4 Louisville Cardinals, complete the Sweet Sixteen cast.
