OREGON EDGES OUT INDIANA, 73-71

Apr. 5, San Antonio TX - Oregon outlasted Indiana with a close win, 73-71, at the Alamodome. Maarty Leunen barged his way inside for the winning basket to give the Ducks the first ticket to the NCAA Final. The Ducks led at the half, 34-29, but Eric Gordon scored on two successive treys to put the Hoosiers in the lead and it was a see-saw fight from thereon. Indiana was up 69-67 with time down to 1:41 after a Gordon 2 and 1, but Bryce Taylor answered back with a jumper to tie the game at 69-all. On the return play, Gordon missed. Oregon senior center Ray Schafer scored on a putback to give the Ducks the lead, 71-69, with 34 seconds remaining. Then Deandre Thomas came up with a dunk on a brilliant pass from A.J. Ratliff to tie the game for the last time, 71-all. Then Leunen went to work.

For his efforts, Leunen, who finished with 16, was awarded the “Player of the Game”. Taylor added 11. Gordon was the game’s high point man with 23 points including 6 three-pointers. Ratliff and Thomas had 14 and 11 respectively. Hoosier D.J. White, who scored 22 against Syracuse, was hit by early foul troubles and had a disappointing night with only 2 points.

LOUISVILLE BOOKS FINAL TICKET, ROUTS UCLA

Apr. 5, San Antonio TX - Louisville prevented an all-Pac 10 final with a rousing victory over UCLA, 70-58, to book the last ticket to the NCAA Final. The Cardinals led at the half, 35-29, and never looked back. Terrence Williams led Louisville with 15 points while Jerry Smith added 11. But it was David Padgett who held his own against UCLA’s Kevin Love in the middle with 9 points and 8 rebounds and in the process limited Love to a measly 5 points. Josh Shipp led the Bruins with 11 while Luc Richard Mbah a Moute and Chace Stanback had 10 apiece.

BAYLOR TAKES NIT, EDGES PITTSBURGH, 68-67

Apr. 2, Syracuse NY – Baylor engaged Pittsburgh in a close encounter to pull off by the slimmest of margin, 68-67, to capture the NIT title at the Carrier Dome. The Bears led the Panthers at the half, 35-34. Kevin Rogers dominated in the middle with a masterful double-double evening of 23 points and 11 rebounds. Curtis Jerrells and freshman Lacedarius Dunn added 16 and 15 points respectively. Levance Fields led the losing side with 15 followed by the 14 of Sam Young, who also grabbed 8 rebounds.
