UC RIVERSIDE FINALLY WINS, BEATS LONG BEACH STATE, 54-45

Feb. 13, Long Beach CA – After 3 straight loses, UC Riverside finally won beating Long Beach State for the second time this season, 54-45. For coach Raymond Rose, the boys needed this one going to the Big West Conference homestretch. The Highlanders led from start to finish and never looked back.

“Player of the Game” Aaron Scott led UC Riverside with 14 points as the Highlanders shot 48% from the field. Donovan Morris shot a game-high 19 points while Arturas Lazdaukas had 11 for the 49ers. UC Riverside heads to Northridge to try a repeat win against Cal State Northridge 3 days from now.

UC RIVERSIDE FAILS TO REPEAT, LOSES TO CAL STATE NORTHRIDGE, 76-67

Feb. 16, Northridge CA – Cal State Northridge has all guns blazing as the Matadors prevented a UC Riverside repeat win by trouncing the Highlanders , 76-67, at the Matadome. UC Riverside defeated Cal State Northridge at home last January 16.

Four starters scored in double figures led by Calvin Chitwood and Jonathan Heard. With a 38-32 halftime advantage, Cal State Northridge led by 13 midway in the final half but UC Riverside came alive to tie the count on a B.J. Visman putback at 58-all but that proved to be the Highlanders’ last stand. Heard scored on an alley-oop pass by Paul Wayne then Chitwood scored on a break to push the Matadors away for good.

“Player of the Game” Chitwood, who also grabbed 8 rebounds, and Heard both scored 17. Deon Tresvant and Jermaine Smith had 10 apiece. Wayne made 8 and threw 8 assist passes. Jayme Miller also had 8 boards. Charles Jim-George led the Highlanders with 17 while Visman contributed 13 points and 7 rebounds.

In other Big West action, Cal State Fullerton followed up a victory over UC Davis this time against Pacific, 76-63. The Tigers has now lost twice in a row. Scott Cutley scored a game-high 16 for the Titans while Michael Nunnally led the Tigers with 12 points and 11 rebounds.

UC Santa Barbara routed UC Davis, 88-65, sending the Aggies further down. Alex Harris topscored with 21 points. D.J. Posley made 19 while James Powell and Chris Devine had 14 apiece. Ivan Elliott grabbed 9 rebounds. David Carter and Jesse Lopez-Low led the Aggies with 12 points each.

UC RIVERSIDE GETS BACK AT UC IRVINE, WINS 50-40

Feb. 20, Riverside CA – UC Riverside somewhat got on track by defeating UC Irvine, 50-40, in a low scoring contest marred by poor shooting from both teams. The Anteaters shot 34%. The Highlanders were a little better at 37% however were 8 of 14 from the three-point line with Charles Jim-George and Aaron Scott accounting for 5 of them.

Scott led UC Riverside with 12 points and was the “Player of the Game”. Jim-George added 11. Severin Gates was 0 of 8 from the field but grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds for the Highlanders, which won the battle at the boards, 30-24. Chuma Awaji led UC Irvine with 11 points while Adam Rodenberg had 7 boards. Michael Hunter who shot 18 points in their 62-54 win last January 25 was limited to only 2. UC Riverside point guard Larry Cunningham had another foul-ridden game and finished with no points for the second straight game.

In the battle between Big West heavies, Pacific (10-3) blew past UC Santa Barbara (9-4), 68-66 in overtime , regulation ended at 59-all. Terrell Smith scored a game-high 16 points while Steffan Johnson added 14. Ivan Elliott led the Gauchos with 13 points.

In other Big West action, Long Beach State (5-7) trounced Cal State Northridge (6-6), 54-48, with the smallest man 49er Maurice Clady being the biggest with 15 points. Donovan Morris had a double-double, 13 points and 11 rebounds. Jonathan Heard led the Matadors with 15 points while Jermaine Smith and Calvin Chitwood had 13 and 11 boards respectively.

UC Davis (5-8) finally won by upsetting Cal Poly (7-5), 65-52. Shane Hanson and Dominic Calegari both made 11 points while David Carter and Vince Oliver had 10 apiece. Jesse Lopez-Low grabbed 8 rebounds for the Aggies. Chaz Thomas led the Mustangs with 12 points with Dawn Whiten adding 11. Dreshawn Vance plucked a game-high 12 boards.

CAL POLY SWEEPS UC RIVERSIDE, 53-44

Feb. 28, San Luis Obispo CA – Cal Polythechnic outhustled UC Riverside at the Mott Gymnasium, 53-44, to remain the biggest threat to Big West’s heavies Pacific and UC Santa Barbara. The Mustangs were behind at the half, 20-23, but Trae Clark and Dreshawn Vance led Cal Poly to a fiery second half to win pulling away.

Clark, who took the “Player of the Game” honors, shot a game-high 15 points. Vance, the conference leader in rebounds, grabbed 11 boards and added 7 points, all in the final canto and together with Titus Shelton, the Mustangs outrebounded the Highlanders, 42-27. Matt Hanson scored 13 points while Chaz Thomas had 8. Charles Jim-George and Aaron Scott led UC Riiverside with 12 and 11 points respectively but received minimal offensive support from the rest of team with the exception of B.J Visman, who had 8 points and 8 rebounds. The Highlanders shot a worse 30% from the field.

UC Riverside next meets the Big West top 2, UC Santa Barbara on March 1 then Pacific on March 5 before they wound up conference play against UC Davis on March 8.

UC SANTA BARBARA OUTLASTS UC RIVERSIDE, 69-56

Mar. 1, Santa Barbara CA – UC Santa Barbara defeated a hard-fighting UC Riverside team at the Thunderdome, 69-56, solidifying the no. 2 spot at the Big West Conference. The Gauchos were outrebounded and outshot but they went to the free throw line 35 times, hitting 25 of them. The Highlanders drop to no.6 in the conference and is fighting for survival with 2 games left, one with conference-leading Pacific and the other with UC Davis, which shares the same 5-9 record with UC Riverside and 2 other teams.

Chris Devine led UC Santa Barbara with 17 points and was “Player of the Game”. James Powell contributed 15 while Big West leading scorer Alex Harris added 13. Aaron Scott, who missed the Highlanders’ last 5 attempts, and Charles Jim-George shot for 11 points apiece for UC Riverside. B.J. Visman, the game’s top rebounder, ended with a double-double 10 markers and 10 boards.

In other Big West action, Pacific defeated Cal Poly, 73-58. Solomon HorseChief led the Tigers with 21 points. Steffan Johnson added 13 while Anthony Brown had a double-double afternoon with 13 points and 11 rebounds. Titus Shelton was the Mustangs’ leading scorer with 13.

Cal State Fullerton fought Long Beach State in a see-saw battle finally winning, 77-75. Titan Scott Cutley was the game’s top scorer with 20 points. Ray Reed had 19 while Andrew Green added 17 for Cal State Fullerton. Donovan Morris and Greg Plater both scored 15 points for the 49ers.

Cal State Northridge sent UC Irvine close to the cellar with a 77-72 win. Calvin Chitwood scored 19 points while Jonathan Heard and Jermaine Smith had 11 apiece for the Matadors. Chuma Awaji led the Anteaters with 19 points. Darren Fells had a double-double 15 markers and 12 rebounds while Kevin Bland added 14 points.
