GOLDSCHMIDT ADDS INSURANCE RUNS IN D'BACKS WIN

PHOENIX, AZ -- The fans left happy tonight after the ball game at Chase Field, as the Arizona Diamondbacks downed the St. Louis Cardinals, for the same score as it was in last night's win, 5-3. It was a closely contested game throughout. Ian Kennedy (1-0, 2.57 ERA) was notched with the win. His first of the season.

The Diamondbacks didn't wait long to start scoring. D'backs outfielder Jason Kubel doubled-in Gerardo Parra to put Arizona up early, 1-0.

"I think it is important to score the first runs. It gives our starting pitcher a bit more confidence." said the veteran Kubel. He ended the night, 2 for 4, and with his third RBI in two games. But it wasn't Kubel who would end up sealing the deal in the Diamondbacks win.

St. Louis' Matt Holliday, who hit two homers the previous night, added to his own onslaught this series, by hitting a towering shot in the sixth inning. It was Holliday's third homerun this season. At the end up the sixth, the game was tied up at 2-2. Ian Kennedy couldn't believe it. That would be Holliday's only run for the night.

"The guy has so much power. I put a two-seamer outside of the zone and he still managed to chase it and knocked it out field." remarked Kennedy. Kennedy would end the night with the lead, after seven innings, allowing two earned on five hits and striking-out four Cardinal batters.

Scoring off a Ross homer in the seventh inning and giving the D'Backs at 3-2 lead, everyone thought it would be a tight game until the final out.

Oh how they were wrong. Arizona first baseman, Paul Goldschmidt, gave the Diamondbacks some breathing room in the bottom of the eight, when he hit a towering shot to left off of reliver Randy Choate, scoring Aaron Hill and giving the D'Backs at 5-2 lead heading into the final inning.

His words were simple regarding the homerun. "I'm just glad I could help out." he said. Goldschmidt ended the night with one hit, but that hit mattered between winning and losing.

In the ninth, it was a bit rocky for J.J. Putz, who came in to close the door on the Cardinals. Holliday would start off the ninth, hitting a routine grounder that went through Martin Prado's glove for a single. That would come back to haunt Arizona, as St. Louis third baseman David Freese hit a single to center, scoring Holliday. It would cut the Diamondback lead to two.

After a visit from pitching coach Charles Nagy, Putz seemed to get collected and would go on to earn his second save of the season.

"Yeah, it was getting kinda hectic there in the ninth." said Nagy. "But I just told him to stay focused and not worry about the numbers. It worked out in our favor."

The final game of this three-game series will commence tomorrow, April 3, at Chase Field. Daniel Hudson will take the mound against the Cardinals' Lance Lynn. The Diamondbacks will then head to Miller Park for the start of their series against the Brewers. Get your brooms out Arizona and come root for your D'Backs tommorrow!
