"Snakebit": Arizona Diamondbacks Franchise [MLB 13: The Show]

ARIZONA DIAMONDBACKS 2013 SEASON PREVIEW

Knowing that they'll be going to war against the Los Angeles Dodgers and San Francisco Giants in the NL West this season, the Arizona Diamondbacks hope a bonding skirmish between themselves pays off in the long run. the Diamondbacks, who are now littered with prospects and veterans. The D'backs may not look the same up an down the roster, but general manager Kevin Towers is confident the club will come together without one legitimate superstar.

"Who is the face of the franchise?" Towers said. "We don't have one. It might be a different guy each and every night. We've got gritty, grinder-type players, but they're talented players, too. They're winning-type players. I think if we stay healthy, I see us applying pressure on our opponent. We're not going to be an easy team to beat. We're going to be pests. We're not going to go away. We've got guys who've won before and know what it takes to win."

Apparently former slugging outfielders Justin Upton and Chris Young didn't know what it takes to be a winner and were sent packing in the offseason. Upton joined his brother in Atlanta and Young jumped leagues to Oakland. Several newcomers headed to the desert, including veteran and World Series champion Cody Ross, Martin Prado and some respectable arms for the rotation and bullpen.

There is no doubt that Arizona gave up quality players in Justin Upton and Chris Young, and there is some concern that production might drop. Upton was a great young player who has the tools to be one of baseballs best players. While his speed and production will be missed, Arizona hit a home run in signing Cody Ross. Ross is a guy who will give you everything he has every singe night and he could become a leader in the Diamondbacks clubhouse.

Many point to The Arizona Diamondbacks rotation as a concern, but it has the potential to be a strong suit for the club. Ian Kennedy, Brandon McCarthy, and Trevor Cahill set the table as the top of the rotation, which should put the Diamondbacks in a position to win. Arizona will also boast a quality lineup. You have to be optimistic with Paul Goldschmidt, Martin Prado, Jason Kubel, Aaron Hill, and Cliff Pennington in the batters box and in the field.

Two years removed from a 94-win season and an NL West title, Arizona hopes its overhaul, level of confidence and depth will lead a second postseason appearance in the past three years.

"There's a great vibe around here. There should be," Gibson said. "We're very gritty, as everybody says. We're also very talented. It's an attitude and an expectation that we're trying to develop."

Can the majority of this young club handle the rigors of a 162-game season? Barring any major setbacks, the D'backs have a reasonable shot.

The water's a bit murky for the Diamondbacks to revert back to their 2011 season of 94 wins and an NL West title. But then again nobody predicted them to overachieve. After a .500 season last year, Arizona is hoping the moves it made in the offseason coupled with a few fresh faces will mesh and lead the club back into the postseason. A lot is riding on the youth and also the right arm of ace Ian Kennedy. Capturing a wild card berth seems more realistic for these guys because the Giants and Dodgers will most likely battle it out for division supremacy. Some teams thrive as an underdog and the Diamondbacks could be the surprise team once again.

Re: "Snakebit": Arizona Diamondbacks Franchise [MLB 13: The Show]

WILL THE TRADE OF UPTON HAUNT THE DIAMONDBACKS?

At the end of January, rumors of Justin Upton being traded from the only team he's ever played for came to fruition when the Diamondbacks sent the slugger to the Atlanta Braves in exchange for utilityman Martin Prado, pitcher Randall Delgado and minor leaguers Nick Ahmed, Brandon Drury and Zeke Spruill.

Third baseman Chris Johnson also was included in the deal to the Braves. But Upton was the blue ribbon prize winner in the deal, no offense to Prado's skillset, however. What Arizona will miss in Upton are durability, power, moderate speed and savvy skills in the outfield. Upton, a two-time All-Star, had spent his entire six-year career in Arizona and in 2012 batted .280 with 17 homers and 67 RBI. He had career bests of 31 homers and 88 RBI in 2011.

Prado is one of a handful of players who will make their desert debut in 2013 and the makeover gives Gibson added depth and more options. Will Upton's power and tremendous upside be missed? Of course, but you have to make do with what's on the roster.

With a lack of star power, the D'backs still have decent bats in the lineup. Left fielder Jason Kubel led the team in home runs (30) and RBI (90) last season and appeared in 141 games. Gerardo Parra and Cody Ross are expected to start at center and right field, respectively. Adam Eaton is a promising young player the D'backs wanted to make room for, which is why Chris Young landed with the Athletics, but Eaton suffered an elbow injury and could be sidelined for two months at the start of the season.

Ross has also been bothered by a lower leg issue in spring training and is questionable to be ready for Opening Day.

Prado, Aaron Hill, who had a .302 average, 26 homers, 85 RBI and 93 runs in 2012, Paul Goldschmidt and Miguel Montero are expected to carry the offensive load this season. Goldschmidt posted 20 homers and 82 RBI last season. Kubel, Hill and Goldschmidt are the heart of the lineup and, if all goes well, will help D'backs fans forget about Upton.

HOW REALISTIC ARE ARIZONA'S CHANCES IN THE AL WEST?

The chances of winning the division are slim for the D'backs, who have to deal with the high payroll of the Dodgers and the momentum the Giants will ride off their second World Series title in three seasons.

Arizona's rotation is just a tier lower than L.A.'s and San Francisco's, but is certainly more formidable than both the Rockies and Padres. A lot is riding on the bats of Kubel, Hill, Goldschmidt, Prado and Montero. Even the bullpen has some question marks. Can closer J.J. Putz put together another solid season? Putz had 45 saves in 2011 and posted 32 more last season. Reliever Heath Bell was added in hopes of him resurrecting his career, while David Hernandez has the firepower to one day take over as the closer.

Josh Collmenter is another trustworthy arm Gibson can go to.

Gibson has a lot of decisions to make as to who bats/plays where and how will playing time be distributed among the newcomers and those who have started to etch their name in franchise lore. Some players are untouchable at their respective positions, including Goldschmidt at first, Montero behind the plate, Hill at second, Kubel in left and Prado at third base. A few wild cards will be Cody Ross, Gerardo Parra, Willie Bloomquist and Eric Chavez.

X-FACTOR: ADAM EATON: Known for a tremendous work ethic and ability to get on base, Eaton has big shoes to fill in center field and expectations to meet once he finally gets into the lineup. A speedy and gritty player from his days in the minors, Eaton hopes to get the ball rolling early on in order to get some runs. Eaton made his debut last September and started his big league career with a five-game hit streak. Eaton homered twice, drove in five runs, scored 19 times and registered a .259 batting average to go along with a .382 on-base percentage. Eaton wasn't afraid to sacrifice his body and was hit by a pitch 62 times in the minors. He did suffer a broken hand in late September.

Eaton is excited to join some new teammates and build stronger bonds.

"The additions during the offseason have been great additions. I'm excited to play alongside those guys," Eaton said. "Diamondback Nation should be very excited and happy. I've been boasting here in the Midwest with everyone that we're going to be an exciting team that's going to be fun to watch, and I'm excited for the year."

Re: "Snakebit": Arizona Diamondbacks Franchise [MLB 13: The Show]

2013 D'BACKS PROSPECT HANDBOOK

Diamondbacks GM Kevin Towers hasn't been shy about overhauling his roster.

He made changes after taking the job at the end of the 2010 season, most notably to the bullpen, and Arizona improved by 29 victories and won the National League West in 2011.

The Diamondbacks geared up for another run at the postseason in 2012 by signing free agent Jason Kubel and trading prospects Jarrod Parker, Ryan Cook and Collin Cowgill to the Athletics for Trevor Cahill and Craig Breslow. But injuries and the inability to duplicate the 48 come-from-behind victories of 2011 contributed to 13 fewer wins, a .500 record and a third-place finish.

Towers started remaking the 2013 roster before last season ended. When former franchise cornerstone Stephen Drew never got his bat going after he came back from ankle surgery, Towers shipped him to Oakland for fringe shortstop prospect Sean Jamieson.

He swung another deal with the A's in October, a three-team transaction with the Marlins that brought Heath Bell and Cliff Pennington to Arizona in exchange for Chris Young, who wasn't the same after injuring his shoulder crashing into an outfield wall in April. Towers added more bullpen help by swapping third-base prospect Ryan Wheeler to the Rockies for Matt Reynolds, and signed veteran free agents Brandon McCarthy and Cody Ross.

Towers made his biggest deal in mid-December when he gave up the third overall pick in the 2011 draft (Trevor Bauer) in a three-team deal to get shortstop Didi Gregorius as a replacement for Drew. And rumors continued to swirl that the Diamondbacks' best player, Justin Upton, was on the block.

While the team's 2012 performance was a disappointment, a steady stream of rookies provided some hope for the future and more fodder with which Towers could remake his club. Wade Miley won 16 games, made the All-Star Game and finished second in NL rookie of the year voting.

Top prospects Tyler Skaggs and Bauer also joined the rotation, though neither was particularly effective. Bauer was demoted after four midseason starts, while Skaggs was shut down after six starts with a tired arm in mid-September. They were outperformed by Patrick Corbin, who provided six wins.

Adam Eaton, a 19th-round pick as senior sign from Miami (Ohio) in 2010, made Young expendable as he continued his meteoric rise through the farm system. Arizona's minor league player of the year, Eaton led the minors in batting (.375), hits (198) and doubles (47) and won the Triple-A Pacific Coast League MVP award. He drilled his first two major league homers in September and will start in center field in 2013.

Eaton was just part of the good news down on the farm. Reno won both the PCL playoffs and the Triple-A National Championship, Mobile grabbed its second straight Double-A Southern League title and Missoula earned the Rookie-level Pioneer League crown.

After Towers arrived in 2010 and senior vice president of scouting and player development Jerry DiPoto left to become Angels GM following the 2011 season, the front office was relatively stable in 2012. The only significant change came in November, when international scouting director Carlos Gomez followed DiPoto to the Angels in the same role. Arizona hired former Red Sox international director Craig Shipley as an assistant to Towers a week later.

TOP FIVE DIAMONDBACK PROSPECTS

1. TYLER SKAGGS, LHP

Scouting Report: The jewel of Skaggs' repertoire is a sharp 12-to-6 curveball that he throws in the mid-70s. It features late, sharp break and is regarded as one of the best in the minors. He set it up with a fastball that ranges from 89-94 mph and features some armside run. He delivers his heater with good downhill plane and spots it to both sides of the plate. He throws in the low 90s more consistently than he ever has, and he also has improved his fastball command as well. Skaggs' changeup gives him a potential third plus pitch, but he needs to trust it more. It arrives at 78-80 mph, has some fade and plays well off his fastball. He can dominate hitters when all three pitches are working for him. Skaggs has smooth, easy mechanics and uses a high three-quarters arm slot. His athleticism allows him to repeat his delivery and consistently command his pitches. He also stands out for his composure on the mound and his idea of what he needs to do with each hitter. He holds runners well with a strong pickoff move, permitting just five steals in eight attempts last year. He didn't give up a single stolen base in his six major league starts and he uses his athleticism to field his position well.

2. ARCHIE BRADLEY, RHP

Scouting Report: Arizona has a pair of potential No. 1 starters in the system, and Bradley has the most electric arm. His fastball ranges from 93-98 mph, though he doesn't always command it well because a high leg kick can throw off his mechanics. At least when he misses, he misses down in the strike zone. Bradley's above-average 12-to-6 curveball gives him a second swing-and-miss pitch, and he's developing feel for an average changeup with nice sink. He has the athleticism and easy delivery to develop solid control, as well as a strong build for durability.

3. ADAM EATON, OF

Scouting Report: Though Eaton is undersized at 5-foot-9, he has plenty of tools. His plus-plus speed stands out the most, and he does an excellent job of putting the ball in play so he can use it. He gets to top speed quickly, making him a basestealing threat. He led the PCL with 38 in 48 tries last year. A prototypical leadoff hitter, Eaton consistently puts together good at-bats and gets on base. He added more pop to his package in 2012 and now projects as a double-digit home run threat. He also made big strides defensively, convincing scouts that he can be a big league center fielder. He has a strong, accurate arm.

4. MATT DAVIDSON, 3B

Scouting Report: Davidson brings a professional approach and plenty of power to the plate. When he doesn't try to do too much, he can drive the ball to all fields. While he continued to improve his plate discipline in 2012, he'll always accumulate strikeouts and probably won't hit for a high average. The opportunity to play regularly at third base helped Davidson enhance his range and actions. His 28 errors led SL third basemen by a wide margin, so he needs more consistency, but he has the soft hands and average arm to play there. Better positioning would help him. He's a below-average runner.

5. DIDI GREGORIUS, SS

Scouting Report: Most scouts see Gregorius as the opposite of Jeter, a gifted defender with questions about his bat. Gregorius has smooth actions, plus range and a sniper rifle of an arm, allowing him to make plays from deep in the hole. He showed improved consistency in 2012, making just 18 errors in 128 games. Scouts are divided on Gregorius' bat. Some think he could end up as a No. 2 hitter, while others think he'll fit at the bottom of a lineup. He's too aggressive and needs to use the whole field more, but he does have gap power. He's an average runner.

DIAMONDBACKS WIN ON OPENING DAY

PHEONIX, AZ --The Arizona Diamondbacks were victorious on opening day, beating Adam Wainwright and the St. Louis Cardinals 5-3. Throughout the game at Chase Field, it seemed as when the St. Louuis Cardinals put a crooked number on the scoreboard, the D'Backs answered with a run of their own. Brandon McCarthy (1-0, 3.86 ERA) was given the starter job and delivered with a win. He lasted seven innings, giving up three earned, on six hits, while fanning four Cardinal batters.

Arizona struck first in inning number one, when Gerardo Parra scored on an Eric Chavez single to center, putting the Diamondbacks on top 1-0. Matt Holliday who contributed to %66 percent of the run production for St. Louis homered twice in three at-bats off of McCarthy.

"I should've known better than to leave that cutter over the plate twice for him." remarked McCarthy, regarding the Holliday long-balls.

Good thing for the ace was that he had his own power hitters to back him up in the tight spot. The inning Holliday's second solo-homerun, young Paul Goldschmidt hit a monster blast to straight-centerfield, himself. It helped provide some insurance for Arizona pitchers, giving the D'Backs the lead after the 4th inning, 4-2.

"I cannot say it enough. This is a gritty team. You've read that in the news and now you're seeing it on the field. We persevered when we needed to." said Diamondbacks manager Kirk Gibson after the game.

Jason Kubel, who earned player-of-the-game honors, was clutch when his team needed it. Following Matt Holliday's first homerun in the second inning, Kubel hit a gapper to left, legging out a double and scoring Martin Prado in the process. Kubel would also add a solo-homer in the fifth inning. He ended the night 2 for 4, with one run of his own, and two runs batted-in.

"I just wanted to make my presence felt tonight and I believe I accomplished that feat. I'm ready for some more." responded the veteran left-fielder in response to his performance.

After Kubel's homerun, the score was 5-3, and then Arizona locked things down after that. McCarthy was pulled in the seventh, allowing setup-man Heath Bell to take over in the eight inning. But it was a rough start. The first Cardinal batter, Peter Kozma, doubled to right. Bell then turned that hit into a triple on a wild pitch to Matt Carpenter. He would then walked Carpenter with one out and runners on the corners.

Just went things looked to be heating up for St. Louis, Bell sat down both Allen Craig and Matt Holliday, the heart of the Cardinal batting order, on strikes. Bell would be marked down for a hold. J.J. Putz then came in and closed the door, sealing the win for the D'Backs and earning his first save of the season..

Game two of the series will commence tomorrow night at Chase Field as Ian Kennedy takes the mound for Arizona agains't St. Louis' Chris Carpenter on Tuesday, April 2nd. Can the D'Backs add to their Opening Day momentum? The 'Snake Pit' sure hopes so!

Re: "Snakebit": Arizona Diamondbacks Franchise [MLB 13: The Show]

Goldschmidt watches as the ball leaves the yard.

GOLDSCHMIDT ADDS INSURANCE RUNS IN D'BACKS WIN

PHOENIX, AZ -- The fans left happy tonight after the ball game at Chase Field, as the Arizona Diamondbacks downed the St. Louis Cardinals, for the same score as it was in last night's win, 5-3. It was a closely contested game throughout. Ian Kennedy (1-0, 2.57 ERA) was notched with the win. His first of the season.

The Diamondbacks didn't wait long to start scoring. D'backs outfielder Jason Kubel doubled-in Gerardo Parra to put Arizona up early, 1-0.

"I think it is important to score the first runs. It gives our starting pitcher a bit more confidence." said the veteran Kubel. He ended the night, 2 for 4, and with his third RBI in two games. But it wasn't Kubel who would end up sealing the deal in the Diamondbacks win.

St. Louis' Matt Holliday, who hit two homers the previous night, added to his own onslaught this series, by hitting a towering shot in the sixth inning. It was Holliday's third homerun this season. At the end up the sixth, the game was tied up at 2-2. Ian Kennedy couldn't believe it. That would be Holliday's only run for the night.

"The guy has so much power. I put a two-seamer outside of the zone and he still managed to chase it and knocked it out field." remarked Kennedy. Kennedy would end the night with the lead, after seven innings, allowing two earned on five hits and striking-out four Cardinal batters.

Scoring off a Ross homer in the seventh inning and giving the D'Backs at 3-2 lead, everyone thought it would be a tight game until the final out.

Oh how they were wrong. Arizona first baseman, Paul Goldschmidt, gave the Diamondbacks some breathing room in the bottom of the eight, when he hit a towering shot to left off of reliver Randy Choate, scoring Aaron Hill and giving the D'Backs at 5-2 lead heading into the final inning.

His words were simple regarding the homerun. "I'm just glad I could help out." he said. Goldschmidt ended the night with one hit, but that hit mattered between winning and losing.

In the ninth, it was a bit rocky for J.J. Putz, who came in to close the door on the Cardinals. Holliday would start off the ninth, hitting a routine grounder that went through Martin Prado's glove for a single. That would come back to haunt Arizona, as St. Louis third baseman David Freese hit a single to center, scoring Holliday. It would cut the Diamondback lead to two.

After a visit from pitching coach Charles Nagy, Putz seemed to get collected and would go on to earn his second save of the season.

"Yeah, it was getting kinda hectic there in the ninth." said Nagy. "But I just told him to stay focused and not worry about the numbers. It worked out in our favor."

The final game of this three-game series will commence tomorrow, April 3, at Chase Field. Daniel Hudson will take the mound against the Cardinals' Lance Lynn. The Diamondbacks will then head to Miller Park for the start of their series against the Brewers. Get your brooms out Arizona and come root for your D'Backs tommorrow!

Re: "Snakebit": Arizona Diamondbacks Franchise [MLB 13: The Show]

LYNN FANS ELEVEN IN CARDINALS WIN

Lynn was a general on the hill over 8 innings

PHOENIX, AZ --
"Masterpiece". That is the only word to describe St. Louis' Lance Lynn (1-0, 0.00 ERA) on the mound this evening. He baffled Arizona hitters over eight innings, allowing no earned runs on three hits, and striking out twelve Diamondback hitters, allowing two walks. Lynn rightfully deserved player-of-the-game honors on his way to his first win of the season, shutting out the D'Backs 2-0.

"He had us off-balanced the whole game. He was on today." said Eric Chavez. Chavez was one of only a few to get a hit and not go down swinging. Chavez's sole hit would come as a double in the ninth.

But Arizona failed to capitalize on the few hits it had tonight.

"You don't see many pitching performances like that. Too bad we were on the wrong side of it." mentioned Kirk Gibson, as he left the D'Backs clubhouse. "We just need to shake it off and get ready to head into Milwaukee." he also remarked.

Daniel Hudson (0-1, 3.00 ERA), who took the mound for Arizona, started off strong.

"They made adjustments." was all that Hudson commented.

Indeed they did, but Hudson didn't helped himself out. He allowed two earned over seven innings, allowing seven hits. One of those earned runs was a bases-loaded walk to Rafael Furcal. He would leave two Cardinal runners on first and second, when he was pulled by manager Kirk Gibson in the seventh.

The Diamondback bullpen, the only REAL positive of the night, allowed no more runs for the rest of the night.

Arizona gets a night off and then heads to Miller Park for a three-game series against the 1-2 Brewers. One of the young suprises of last season for Arizona, Wade Miley, will take the mound against Milwaukee's Michael Fiers. Both pitchers are making their season debuts for their respected teams.
