Re: Game 14, Year 14 Preview (2023 season): #22 Tulane Green Wave vs. #21 Iowa Hawkey

Wow... is that Michael Jordan? Look at that airtime! (bad joke - intended)

Iowa's swiss cheese secondary... wish we faced that kind against them this year. Sheesh.

This team should be easy to beat, but for their 75 rated RB to run for 1200+ behind that line is something you might want to look out for. For an average team, they sure put up some stats.

Just noticed, Tulane's four losses have come against teams with a combined record of 43-5.
I was pretty stunned when looking at Iowa's roster after seeing they went 10-2.

I'd say Michigan, Ohio St., and Penn St. have emerged as the powerhouses of the Big 10, as expected, but then there is a big step down to the next tier and Wisconsin is at C+.

Obi has really come back down to Earth in the passing game. My feeling is that this should be another game where we try to pound the rock. It seems Clemons has turnover issues when we try to rely on him too much. That being said, I think it is pretty awesome that he's struggling from a dynasty reporter-standpoint, given he's just an unheralded 3-star recruit.

Good catch on the 43-5; I hadn't even thought about that. I really think this team is primed to make a big run next year and was just victimized by the offensive injury bug this season.

LOL...I want to understand the Michael Jordan joke but I don't.

Their offensive line is very big, I'll give them that. Their entire line is over 340 pounds; not sure if that matters in the game though. Nevertheless, they have some decent enough offensive pieces to give us problems if we don't come to play. Their QB is good and they have a fairly solid core of WRs. They could give us some fits if we're not careful.

Hopefully we can out-class them eventually and come away with a much-needed W to close out this disappointing season.

Thanks bros...FINALLY about to play this game after what was a long break!

Game 14, Year 14 (2023 season): #22 Tulane Green Wave vs. #21 Iowa Hawkeyes

        #22 47 -- 10-4
        #21 31 -- 10-3

RB Tim Powers had a masterful New Year's Day performance, barreling his way to 265 rushing yards and 2 touchdowns in his final appearance as a member of the Green Wave.

With QB Clemons and RB Tompkins injured, senior RB Tim Powers puts the team on his back as #22 Tulane outlasts #21 Iowa for a 47-31 Capital One Bowl victory | Former 4-star recruit rushes for 265 yards and 2 touchdowns in his final collegiate game | Green Wave's injury-ravaged season comes to fitting close as walk-on QB Larson gets forced into action and makes critical plays down the stretch to help Wave get to double-digit wins for 12th straight season | Geezy: Critical off-season ahead with team 'on the cusp of something special'

Orlando, FL -- #22 Tulane had played most of its season without its starting QB Bryce Allen and #1 WR Brandon McIntyre, so they were just about used to overcoming adversity. In Sunday's Capital One Bowl matchup, it was more of the same as the Green Wave had to withstand even more injuries and make big second half plays to fend off a game-Iowa squad and come away with a 47-31 victory in Orlando. RB Tim Powers rushed for 265 yards to help lead his team to victory, despite the team missing Allen's replacement, sophomore QB Obi Clemons, along with play-making RB Tony Tompkins for most of the second half.

Sophomore RB Tony Tompkins missed most of the second half due to a shoulder injury, however his third punt return touchdown of the season got the scoring spree started for Tulane early.

The Green Wave got off to a fast start versus the #21 ranked Hawkeyes. After its defense forced a quick three and out on the game's opening possession, Tulane got a big play from a familiar source as Tompkins' 60-yard punt return touchdown gave the Wave a quick 7-0 lead less than two minutes into the contest. It was the recent "Return Man of the Year" award winner's third punt return touchdown of the season and his first since taking a pair back to the house during the team's 48-16 blowout win at Auburn in game 6 of this season. Tompkins' big first half wasn't done.

After the Wave defense got an interception by CB Tyler Johnson that led to a field goal that made the score 10-0, Tompkins went back to work after yet another defensive stop. This time, the sophomore Florida native's 3-yard run on an option pitch from Clemons resulted in a touchdown that gave their team a commanding 17-0 lead early in the third quarter and the Green Wave looked set to cruise to its 9th bowl victory of head coach D. Geezy's 14-season tenure.

        Not so fast my friend.

After a horrid start, Iowa was finally able to get some production in the second quarter and get themselves right back in the game. True freshman PK Ben Williams connected on a 38-yard field goal to make the score 17-3. Then, following an interception thrown by Clemons to DT Greg Taylor on a tipped pass, Hawkeyes QB Mark Horne's 12-yard touchdown pass to RB/WR Scott Hodge made the score 17-10 midway through the second quarter.

Clemons was able to make amends for his earlier turnover by throwing a 24-yard touchdown pass to WR Lionel Parks to up their team's lead up to 24-10 with just over a minute to go in the half. However, Iowa was able to bounce back once again seconds later when RB Russell Richards broke through 3 tackles and scored on a long 82-yard run that cut his team's deficit to 24-17 going into halftime.

"We could not stop the run today and that's an area we've struggled in, especially in this latter part of the season," said Geezy of his team's defensive unit.

In the third quarter, disaster struck early for Tulane. Three plays into the team's very first possession following the break, Tompkins suffered a shoulder injury and was forced to leave the game. Just one play later, Clemons (73 ovr) was forced to leave the game with a pectoral injury and the team would have to insert its emergency third string quarterback into the lineup - former walk-on Nate Larson (40 ovr, 77 thp, 52 tha).

Emergency QB Nate Larson, a former walk-on fullback, was pressed into action in the second half and helped keep the Wave offense steady while also completing a 64-yard touchdown pass in the third quarter.
Larson, the cousin of Wave PK Aaron Larson, started his career at Tulane as a fullback after playing quarterback at Chalmette High School in Louisiana. Following the injury to Allen, the team was forced to move the 6-2 245 pound Larson to quarterback in order to serve as a backup. The team has two other quarterbacks on its roster - true freshman Jimmy McBride and junior college transfer Bruce Schroeder - but the team elected to redshirt both players this season and did not want either to burn a year of eligibility just for the sake of playing two quarters of football.

With both Clemons and Tompkins down, the Green Wave gave the Hawkeyes defense a heavy dose of Powers the rest of the way. The senior and former 4-star recruit's 59-yard touchdown run gave Tulane a 31-17 lead, but once again Iowa would respond.

This time, a 10-play, 73-yard march by the Hawkeyes culminated with a 7-yard run in which Richards dove into the end zone to make the score 31-24. Richards finished the contest with 26 carries for 187 yards and 2 touchdowns on the afternoon and suddenly put Tulane on its heels, trailing by just a touchdown with less than a quarter and a half to go.

That was when a pair of unlikely heroes came through with a clutch play for the Wave.

Larson was able to direct a quick 5-play drive to increase his team's lead once again. His 64-yard touchdown completion to Parks made the score 38-24 with 2:34 remaining in the third quarter. Larson finished the game 3 of 6 for 105 yards along with the touchdown pass while Parks finished the game with 3 receptions for 99 yards and 2 touchdowns, all career-highs.

"Nate's a guy that's really been nice utility player for us as a walk-on," said Tulane offensive coordinator Curtis Byrd of Larson, who Wave brass credited with helping them discover his place-kicking cousin and recruit him to New Orleans.

"He came on as a fullback in 2021 before my arrival and we saw him throwing the ball in pre-practice this past spring and were impressed. He's been practicing with both the fullbacks and quarterbacks on the scout team and today it paid off."

Iowa did not go away easy as they'd convert 4 third downs in the midst of a 13-play 78-yard drive that lasted over four minutes. The drive ended with a 4-yard touchdown run by Hodge to make the score 38-31 with 7:23 remaining, but that would be all she wrote for the Hawkeyes offense.

"The bulk of their game plan was obviously to get the running game going while also augmenting that with feeding the ball to their backs and tight ends in the passing game," said Geezy.

"For whatever reason, we had a difficult time stopping them and getting off the field on third downs, which was very disappointing."

Going on a long drive of their own (10 plays, 85 yards, 3:15) behind the legs of Powers, Tulane was able to get the cushion they'd need to put the game away. The senior's 5-yard touchdown carry made the score 45-31 with 4:08 remaining, making it a two possession game, and Geezy had nothing but great things to say about Powers' individual performance.

Senior RB Tim Powers' 1,316 rushing yards this season are the most since former Green Wave RB Orleans Darkwa rushed for 2,052 yards all the way back in 2013.

"Tim has been outstanding, both today and really the past two seasons. The way he runs and operates and the power he runs with...he's really become quite a load to handle in our backfield and you certainly hate losing a guy like him. He's got a bright future ahead of him."" said Geezy.

Iowa would not score another point the rest of the way, getting shut down by Tulane's defense the remainder of the contest. Wave true freshman DE T.J. Pearson's sack of Horne resulted in a fumble that was recovered in the end zone by the Hawkeyes for a safety that made the score 47-31 with under a minute remaining, putting the game away for Tulane.

"This was a see-saw battle and we had a little more difficulty than we anticipated on the defensive side of the ball," said Geezy.

"On the positive side though, we did a tremendous job of buckling down in the fourth quarter when it mattered most and guys like Larson and Powers stepped up when we needed it."

Tulane finishes the 2023 with a 10-4 record, the most losses they've had since the 2013 season.

"We've overcome a lot of adversity this season and while we did not accomplish our goals, you can't help but be proud of this bunch," said Geezy.

"We have a very big off-season coming up next year as we truly think we are right there on the cusp of something special. We expect most of our core group to return, and if we can supplement that with some solid new pieces while also getting healthy, we could really be a force to be reckoned with come next fall."

RB Tim Powers salutes the crowd one final time as his career at Tulane comes to a fitting close.

WR Lionel Parks (#80) and the Green Wave run out of tunnel in Orlando, making a Capital One Bowl appearance for the third time in four seasons.

Sophomore CB Tyler Harrison's third interception of the season came on Iowa's second possession of the game and led to a field goal that put the Wave up 10-0 just minutes into the first quarter.

RB Tony Tompkins spun past Iowa CB Jarrett Brooks and left him grasping for air on this 3-yard touchdown run that made the score 17-0 early in the second quarter.

Redshirt sophomore WR Lionel Parks showed off his toe-drag swag on this 24-yard touchdown that made the score 24-10 in the second quarter. It was Parks' first of two scores on the day.

Hawkeyes RB Russell Richards did what many backs have done to the Tulane defense this season, rushing for 187 yards and 2 touchdowns, including this dive into the end zone that cut his team's deficit to 31-24 in the third quarter.

QB Obi Clemons struggled to find open passing lanes most of the day as he finished with only 71 passing yards and threw 2 interceptions before being forced to exit the game with a pectoral injury.

QB Mark Horne was unspectacular but efficient, as he's been most of the year, finishing with 258 passing yards and a touchdown.

Tulane true freshman blue chip DE T.J. Pearson capped off his solid rookie season by sacking Horne for a safety late in the fourth quarter, giving him 6 sacks in his debut campaign.

Tulane senior DT Kenny Chase has some fun with the crowd during the final seconds of his last college game.

Tulane star junior OG Jay Bonner, the #1 high school offensive guard prospect in the nation in 2021 and projected first round NFL draft pick, enjoys the confetti shower after the game knowing he has a big decision to make in the coming days on if he will return to the Green Wave for his senior season.

If you would've told me that Obi and Tompkins would get hurt and that you'd only complete eight passes and that you'd give up 187 on the ground to Richards, I would've asked to just not see the score. Good win and just another in the line of tough, hard-earned victories this year. Yeah, four losses is the most in a long time for the program, but hard to imagine many other teams not racking up 6-8 losses with those injuries -- both long term and the single-gamers that seemed to strike all year.

Excellent stuff! I picked up your thread a few days ago and have completely caught up! I used to dabble in dynasty reporting back in the day and your dynasty makes me want to start that up again. I wish I was more tech savvy though

By the way, you had me dying with the Eve Jewell pics that would become increasingly risqué as the reporting went on!! I was literally laughing out loud while I was at work!

Keep up the great stuff! Tulane will get back to the big stage for sure!

A beautiful end to a very hard fought season. I thought the bowl game really epitomized the struggles of the season, including seeing some of the unsung blue collar heroes (I am thinking of Powers here) coming through and making the plays. And what a storyline in Larson.

I was a little surprised at the fits Iowa's offense gave you. I didn't expect your defense to have quite that hard of the time, but the speed of their ground game proved why they were ranked the way they were.

I have to agree with your assessment. I think you are on the cusp of a NC run. Now we will have to see how the offseason plays out but provided Allen returns I am really liking your odds. I have a funny feeling though that his return might not be as in the bag as we have all been assuming....Hopefully I am wrong on that one.

Any plans on what direction you are going to go with the power back position now with Powers moving on?

Loving this as always my friend. The presentation, the writing. I cannot express enough times my admiration. Nothing better than sitting down in the evenings to read this.

Thanks BookWork...I was really hoping to see a split national championship. Not only does USC deserve it, but I am just very curious about if that sort of scenario even exists in this game. Sadly, there probably won't be a better test study than this past result.

Appreciate it mang. This was indeed a disappointing year, especially with all the injuries. Hopefully they can become a blessing in disguise and guys like QB Bryce Allen (89 ovr) and WR Brandon McIntyre (90 ovr) decide to return for their senior seasons since their numbers were low. If those two come back, I think we are definitely in the national contender conversation next year.

This was an ugly game from both squads, but in the end, I think we were able to just wear them down and flex our muscle for the last quarter and a half. Tim Powers really came through for us as did the walk-on QB, coming up with the big touchdown pass for us when we needed it most.

That's a great way silver lining you've pointed out - not too many teams can lose its starting QB and top WR and still contend. As I alluded to with Lopaka, the hope is that this season has toughened us up in some ways in preparation for what will hopefully be a title run in 2024.

This is a pivotal year coming up for us. It has officially taken me as long to win a national title in this Part II project starting off with a defending NC roster than it took me to win one in Part I starting off with a terrible roster.

First off - thanks a ton for taking the time out to read through this thread. It is hard to believe that this thing will be hitting the 2-year mark and just a couple of months.

Glad you noticed Eve Jewell getting more and more um, comfortable, as time passes. She's had quite the story, going from a student/recruiting HOstess in the Part 1 journey to becoming a blossoming reporter over the years here in Part II.

Thanks for the reply man and hope you stick around; this thing is nowhere near finished!

It's always interesting how, whether it is real life or video games, college or NFL, postseason games usually give you a nice microcosm of your entire season. You hit the nail on the head in that this bowl game really was a tale of our season as a whole.

Big kudos to RB Tim Powers. He looked like a bust early in his career, coming to Tulane as a 4-star recruit with only a 66 overall rating, but he really turned it on for us this year and had one of the finest seasons we've had from a running back in recent memory.

As for how we will replace him - that's still TBD. We don't really have a power running back on the roster once he leaves, so we may end up doing away with that element altogether depending on how the off-season shakes out. I haven't even thought of that until you brought it up, but that's an element that any good team needs to have, so hopefully we can land someone in off-season recruiting to fill the void.

We have had problems defensively versus running backs all season long. There are some changes in store on defense, as you'll get a glimpse of in a moment, however we should have a veteran group returning next year so I am hoping we make a big leap in 2024 on that side of the ball.

I will be simming to the first step of the off-season later this morning (Players Leaving). I am on pins and needles about not only QB Bryce Allen's decision, but also WR Brandon McIntyre, and a handful of our other players. As you know, I am not allowed to try to convince anyone to stay, so it is literally up to the game to decide. Hopefully the sim gods do us a solid and determine that most of the team wants to come back for a shot at redemption.

I appreciate the compliments as always man. I am having more fun with this than ever and I am glad to hear it shows through the writing and presentation.

Thanks for the feedback fellas. I am really looking forward to the off-season, which is one of my most enjoyable parts of this dynasty. Also of note - the front page has been updated with all the new data from this past season!

Sad to see you parting ways with your friend but the way the defense has played down the stretch, I think it was a much needed change. It will be very interesting to see what scheme changes you will be looking at for the future. Looking forward to it!
